They worked hard at it, but it's unacceptable
By Stan Vernooy
This book apparently has two primary goals: to cover a large amount of material and to do so at as low a price as possible. Those two goals are astonishingly well achieved, but the deficiencies are so severe that they render the book unacceptable.
First, the printing is substandard: unadorned Courier or something similar, not right-justified, and is so primitive that the publishers cannot use much of the usual notation. Since vector analysis uses mathematical symbolism heavily, this is a major disadvantage. The same on-the-cheap approach applies to the diagrams. There is no color, and the diagrams are composed almost entirely of compass-and-ruler constructions and notation in the same typeface as the text.
Second, the index is inadequate. This book is likely to be used as a reference rather than read sequentially, so the index is important. This index doesn?t include some of the most fundamental terms or topics, such as "component" or "dimension". There are scores (if not hundreds) of references to derivatives in the book, and yet the index includes only five references to derivatives.
There is not a single reader exercise in the book (unless I missed something). The book is intended to be a demonstration of how Vector Analysis is done, so all the problems are worked out by the authors. If the readers have their own textbooks, this is not necessarily a big disadvantage. But this book, in the introduction, actually criticizes other texts for requiring the students to do exercises, and goes on to make the following stunning statement: "The staff of REA considers vector analysis a subject that is best learned by allowing students to view the methods of analysis and solution techniques themselves."
I can't overemphasize what an incredible statement that is. There are not two schools of thought on this issue. The idea that a student can learn Vector Analysis (or any mathematical topic) by watching someone else do it, makes as much sense as recommending that someone learn to play the guitar by listening to Eric Clapton. That one point of educational philosophy alone demonstrates conclusively that the book is incompetent.
The Problem Solver series is apparently produced with another eccentric belief, and one that is annoying for anyone accustomed to reading traditional math books. The publishers apparently believe (according to their own words in the introduction) that one of the shortcomings of other books is that they present material without first explicitly stating what the goal of each paragraph or section is. (In my experience, this criticism is sometimes valid, but usually not.) Their solution to this is to make every word in the text, part of the statement or solution to a "Problem". However, these are not problems in the usual sense. For example, the second "problem" in the book asks for the dimensions of five vectors which are presented in component form. At that point in the book (page 3), the word "component" has not been defined, no vectors have yet been presented in component form, and the equality between dimension and the number of components has not yet been mentioned. So this is not a "problem" that anyone would be able to solve if his knowledge were limited to what has been presented in the book up to that point. The book usually presents those necessary definitions in the course of "solving" the problem (although in this case, they don't define the word component, and as far as I can see they NEVER define that word. As I mentioned earlier, "component" and "dimension" are both missing from the index.) This entire quirky approach reminds me of that TV game where the contestants are required to respond with a question instead of an answer. It requires a pointlessly awkward presentation just to cram the material into their ideological system. The definitions and formulas are not designated separately, as in other books, but imbedded in the problem "solutions".
Most important, the book is full of mathematical errors. Page 22 refers to "vectors of the same magnitude" when they mean "vectors of the same dimension". Page 23 has a problem involving vector addition and subtraction, in which they present a1, b1, c1, a2, b2, and c2 as components of vectors (using subscripts), and proceed to use a1c1 as the DIFFERENCE between those two components (or the distance between the terminal points of the horizontal projections of vectors a and c, which is the same thing). Of course, they should have used c1 - a1. This is not just non-standard notation; it is simply mathematically wrong. And I believe they repeat that same error in other problems later on.
In proving an important theorem (the equivalence of the algebraic and geometric/trigonometric definitions of dot products), they suddenly pull out a formula from analytic geometry that very few calculus students in the US will ever have seen. Since the use of that formula renders the rest of the proof entirely trivial, the student will learn nothing at all about how to prove theorems from reading that proof. The same sort of thing happens in Problem 3-6, where they use a formula for finding the components of a projection - a formula which has never been mentioned before, and which they neither derive nor explain.
The book constantly rounds off intermediate results. This should never be done in these days of 12-digit calculators, and ESPECIALLY when the calculated number is to be used as input into an inverse trigonometric or exponential function. In fact, they don't even really round those numbers off - they just truncate them! This causes their final answers to be wrong in many cases, such as in Problem 3-11, where the answer should be the vector (0.279, 0.885, -0.373). This is amateurish. If the authors don't know better than that then they shouldn't be writing math books.
After reading "Problem" 3-16 on pages 81-82, I finally gave up entirely on this book. The problem statement asks for the cross product of two vectors, while sort of half-defining the cross product within the problem statement itself. Then, in the "solution", they don't find the cross-product at all! They find only the magnitude! They simply forgot to finish the problem!
This book was never competently proofread, peer-reviewed, or edited. Presumably that would have been too expensive. But this amateurish production is unusable for learning Vector Calculus. Not recommended.

An Indispensable Reference
By Herbert L Calhoun
Advance mathematical concepts (such as the idea of a "basis vector," for instance) cannot be fully grasped without eventually working through a "sample vector space" in which one devises his own basis vectors for the vector space in question. Once the idea is made real, through examples, the reader can then move on with confidence to the next concept.

This is of course the real value of the book, it helps build up confidence in "seeing how" both easy and more difficult problem are worked through. It gives example after example of actual problems for, not just "basis vectors," but also for a whole host of other difficult concepts in vector analysis and vector calculus.

A prudent reader would do well to take out his pencil and work through the examples in the book and then try one of his own devising. That is what I did and now I feel fairly confident that I again really understand these concepts.

One word of warning, the book assumes full understanding of all the concepts of vector analysis through linear algebra and vector calculus. For those like myself (who have not seen these concepts since grad school), it does not hurt to have a reference or two in each of these areas handy while working through the problems. I found the Marsden-Tromba book on vector calculus and the two-volume set by Jacobson on Linear Algebra to be quite sufficient to lean on for the needed theory prepping.

The only criticism I have of the book is that the flow of difficulty of the problems is a bit uneven. In most sections the flow is from "too simple" to "much too difficult" with nothing in between, which is yet another reason to have the text books handy to lean on. Most text books pose "immediate level" problems as exercises at the end of each chapter which can be used to fill in the blank between the easy and difficult problems solved in this book. Altogether, it is an indispensable reference book. Four stars

Great book.
By J. Alvarado
If you have taken a calculus based physics course and need some help going over some of the mathematics this book and the other rea books are great. If you have taken physics than you understand there is a lot of different notation so this book will be any easy read you. The way this book should be used is as an aid, since you are assumed to know calculus and some linear algebra you can just look up the problem you are working on and check your work with similar problems in the book. You should not use this book to learn from there is no such book that you can do that with, there has never been a book that covers a whole subject especially without a typo ever. This book is 25 years old and was discontinued since most american dont do this type of mathematics so there was no need for revisions. If you are coming from a physics background then this has more than enough steps for all its problems, if you are from a poor mathematics background then you will have problems and give up on the book. If you do have problems with mathematics the other rea books cover the material you need for the book( ie:calculus, Linear algebra, pre-calculus, algebra) well so that you can come back and read this book with ease.

Remember its a GUIDE and worth the price if you do physics and upper level mathematics. If you dont math/physics and you want a book that does everything then you can read the other reviews/complains.

Nithyananda answers questions from seekers. He gives instant clarity and restfulness to the questioning mind.

“It is because of desires that the space and time seem to matter. With desires arise jealousy, greed, anger and fear. And you become confined to space and time. If you stop being driven by desires, you will transcend space and time into a plane of pure awareness. Then, intelligence will stem from creative consciousness and you will excel in the outer and inner worlds.”

Good Overview of Pharmacy
By H. Tran
I found this book a good review of pharmacy school. It contained information on fluid volume in a patient, enteral nutrition and TPNs, a review of pharmacy calculations and kinetics, an overview of medical procedures, and lab values. It is good for a person whom has been out of school for a short while but does not want to or is not able to find their old class notes.

Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business, by John Mackey, Rajendra Sisodia

As seen on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday

A New York Times and Wall Street Journal Bestseller

In this book, Whole Foods Market cofounder John Mackey and professor and Conscious Capitalism, Inc. cofounder Raj Sisodia argue for the inherent good of both business and capitalism. Featuring some of today’s best-known companies, they illustrate how these two forces can—and do—work most powerfully to create value for all stakeholders: including customers, employees, suppliers, investors, society, and the environment.

These “Conscious Capitalism” companies include Whole Foods Market, Southwest Airlines, Costco, Google, Patagonia, The Container Store, UPS, and dozens of others. We know them; we buy their products or use their services. Now it’s time to better understand how these organizations use four specific tenets—higher purpose, stakeholder integration, conscious leadership, and conscious culture and management—to build strong businesses and help advance capitalism further toward realizing its highest potential.

As leaders of the Conscious Capitalism movement, Mackey and Sisodia argue that aspiring leaders and business builders need to continue on this path of transformation—for the good of both business and society as a whole.

At once a bold defense and reimagining of capitalism and a blueprint for a new system for doing business grounded in a more evolved ethical consciousness, this book provides a new lens for individuals and companies looking to build a more cooperative, humane, and positive future.

From Booklist
Mackey and Sisodia, leaders of the corporation Conscious Capitalism, describe the movement in the context of Mackey’s reflections as cofounder of Whole Foods Market. The term conscious capitalism refers to businesses that serve the interests of all major stakeholders—customers, employees, investors, communities, suppliers, and the environment. Mackey’s realization of conscious capitalism began on Memorial Day 1981, as the fledgling Whole Foods Market was basically wiped out by a flood. Unexpectedly, dozens of customers and neighbors showed up to help; employees worked for free, not knowing if the store would survive; suppliers resupplied on credit; investors stepped up, too, and the Whole Foods Market’s bank loaned it money to restock; the store reopened in 28 days. Following two introductory chapters, part 1 covers purpose; part 2 is about stakeholders; part 3, conscious leadership; and part 4, conscious culture and management. Mackey and Sisodia cite companies such as Southwest Airlines, Google, the Container Store, Whole Foods Market, and Nordstrom as embracing this sound vision of reality. A very solid examination. --Mary Whaley

Review
“Conscious Capitalism is full of thoughtful insights and original observations that could help organisations from start-ups to multinationals become better at creating financial and social wealth for all their stakeholders… I recommend it to entrepreneurs and investors everywhere – I strongly suspect it will be one of the outstanding business books of the year.” — Luke Johnson, Financial Times

“…at a time when the public reputation of big business has hit a dangerous low, surely the efforts of Messrs. Gates, Porter and Mackey—and even Ms. Nooyi—to make capitalism better can't be all bad. As the authors put it: "Free market capitalism is one of the most powerful ideas we humans have ever had. But we can aspire to even more. Let's not be afraid to climb higher." — Alan Murray, The Wall Street Journal

"... a good read with useful insights for those who are, or aspire to be, entrepreneurial." — Pamela Hartigan, Financial Times

“Even if you don’t agree with all or most of Mackey and Sisodia’s arguments, their vision—essentially, startups for grownups—seems viscerally compelling, and describes the sort of enterprise that I suspect most would love to join.” — David Shaywitz, Forbes.com

“Had [Mackey and Sisodia’s] application of higher consciousness been in the boardroom a generation ago, we might have avoided the suffocating regulations of Sarbanes-Oxley and Dodd-Frank, and the dire straits of companies like General Motors, Sears, Citibank, and even Enron…Conscious Capitalism is still an inspiring blueprint for a better world.” — Mark Skousen, BARRON’s

“Conscious Capitalism is a wonderful book, full of fiery passion and incisive insights. So buy it. Read it. Implement it. It’s a true guide to future.” — Steve Denning, Forbes.com

“Mackey and Sisodia make a valiant effort to redeem a practice often tainted by greed and corruption and show that if the individuals managing the system commit to conscious capitalism, everyone benefits.” — Publishers Weekly

“I would place Conscious Capitalism at the top of my list of good reading—by far. It's not just the writing; the intent of the book is very good.” — Gilda Chan, Senior Merchandising Planner at Vera Bradley

“Conscious Capitalism, raises valid points about ‘heroic entrepreneurs’ and ‘conscious companies’ that are ‘butterflies’ as opposed to the normal ‘caterpillar’ companies, focused only on profit optimisation and shareholder value.” — Outlook Business (India)

“The book is an exceptional guide to best practices in organizational leadership. It is refreshing, high on ideals, and has a fair dose of prescription for creating and operating enterprises with a conscience.” — Business World

“Conscious Capitalism builds the case for free market enterprise, driven by a purpose other than profit.” — Mint (livemint.com)

In stark contrast to today’s often pessimistic view of capitalism, MacKey and Sisodia defend the old principles while simultaneously urging business leaders to transform how they do business. Business cases ... show that companies are perfectly capable of creating more value for all of their stakeholders, from customers, employees, suppliers, and investors to society as whole and the environment. — Business Digest (France)

“In all the chapters, you’ll find how the effects of having a passionate, inspired team build stakeholder relations at a variety of firms in many industries.” – Jim Pawlak, Dallas Morning News

“…a must-read, with a message especially appropriate for these times of dysfunctional political polarization, with “red-state” Republicans over-simplistically depicted as conservative and pro-business and “blue-state” Democrats as liberal and anti-business.” — Lanny Davis, TheHill.com

“Conscious Capitalism is in keeping with the ancient wisdom of India as it views leadership as trusteeship, which is all about focusing on the right actions and not being attached to outcome.” — The Economic Times

“… the most powerful part of Mackey’s message: running a wholesome business doesn’t mean your business has to cut back on profitability. Doing the right thing pays, Mackey writes.” – Robert Gratton, Austin Business Journal

“Whole Foods co-founder Mackey, writing with economist Sisodia, offers a persuasive paean to free enterprise. Light on ideology and long on thoughtful analysis—a good book to hand to the budding entrepreneur in the family.” — Kirkus Reviews

I welcome this book and hope asset-managers will take heed.” — Hazel Henderson, Seeking Alpha

“Thus it is the responsibility of ethical and conscious businesspeople and entrepreneurs to demonstrate to society their important role in the world, what businesses can do for local communities, for families and to solve deep social problems. Conscious capitalism is therefore not only a story worth telling but is a vision of our world worth preserving.”— The Classic Libertarian Perspective (Blog)

“… very good, with useful insights on almost every page…” — Marc Gunther, Sustainable Business Forum

“Conscious capitalism is a refreshing vision of economics that assumes people want more than just money. It’s also a vision that supplements the narrow interests of investors with the broader interests of employees, managers, customers, and the larger community. As the success of Whole Foods demonstrates, it works.” — James A. Ogilvy, strategy+business

“Conscious Capitalism is a book you will want to share with every business owner, manager, and worker you know.” — Jo Ann Skousen, Liberty

“an inspiring defense of free enterprise…an exceptional guide to best practices in organizational leadership...Conscious Capitalism: Liberating the Heroic Spirit of Business is a treatise for a cultural revolution.” — Wesley Gant, Values and Capitalism, an initiative at the American Enterprise Institute

“Conscious Capitalism is [Mackey's] philosophy of how capitalism and good business can - and should - be the driving force of change in the world. Business leaders must be attuned to an 'ethical consciousness', argue the authors, and through this all stakeholders, including employees, customers, shareholders and society as a whole will benefit.... making the case that companies who take genuine care of their workers and communities and the environment actually end up creating the most profits and long-term shareholder value.” — SAPress – South Africa

ADVANCE PRAISE for Conscious Capitalism:

From the Foreword: Bill George, bestselling author of True North—
“This is the book I always wanted to write.”

Howard Schultz, chairman, president, and CEO, Starbucks—
“I have long believed that companies have a responsibility to balance profitability with a social conscience, yet few leaders have an inherent understanding of just how to do it. In Conscious Capitalism, John Mackey and Raj Sisodia provide a timely, realistic framework so companies can better serve a variety of stakeholders. I highly recommend listening to what they have to say.”

Herb Kelleher, former Chairman and CEO, Southwest Airlines—
“Conscious Capitalism is a welcome explication and endorsement of the virtues of free-enterprise capitalism—properly comprehended, there is no more beneficial economic system—and a simultaneously pragmatic and inspirational extolment of higher purpose and humanism in business. I hail and revere the tenets of Conscious Capitalism!”

Ratan N. Tata, Chairman, Tata Sons—
“This book provides the script for a much-needed different narrative for free- enterprise capitalism. Businesses need to be driven by a purpose higher than maximizing profit, and they must ensure optimal benefits to all stakeholders. Only if that happens can capitalism deliver to all humanity the full societal benefits it is capable of.”

Sally Jewell, CEO, REI—
“By so clearly and thoughtfully articulating the tenets of Conscious Capitalism, Raj and John have helped me understand the power behind the sustainable success in our business, raising my consciousness in guiding REI forward to serve a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts and environmental stewards.”

Biz Stone, Cofounder and Creative Director, Twitter
“John Mackey’s journey to awakening is an inspiration not just to entrepreneurs, but to anyone who believes in a new definition of success for capitalism—one that includes positive societal impact as well as traditional business metrics.”

Doing Well by Doing Good!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
In the October 2005 issue of Reason Magazine, John Mackey, Milton Friedman, and T.J. Rogers debated whether businesses had any larger social responsibility than to maximize profits for shareholders: Mackey was the lone voice for the affirmative. 7+ years later, Conscious Capitalism can best be thought of as an extension and years-later elaboration on Mackey's argument. This book is one part spirited defense of free market capitalism and several parts description of how businesses can and should become more aware of ALL stakeholders (shareholders, workers, customers, distributors, the environment and the community.)

Before going into the how-to's, Mackey starts with a spirited but brief defense of market capitalism. Mackey recounts how he started as a co-founder of a co-op, but left largely because others' political agendas - largely, anti-market - prevented, in Mackey's judgement, the co-op from serving its customers well. Mackey built the store that would come to be Whole Foods and discovered the potential of markets and market transactions to change people's lives. (Lest we forget, markets are less about exploitation and zero-sum thinking than they are about voluntary positive-sum transactions, each party providing what the other wants.) Sadly, when most of us think of market capitalism, we tend to think of Ayn-Rand-like glorification of selfishness and greed as well as economic reductionism (reducing everything to purely economic calculation sans 'the human element.') Needless to say, this is a perception Mackey rightly wants to change.

The rest of the book - the meat and potatoes - are about Mackey's conception of "conscious capitalism" - companies who do well by doing good. Mackey's favorite examples: Google, Amazon, Costco, Southwest Airlines, The Container Store, and (who else?) Whole Foods Market. These are companies who do well by workers, customers, distributors, investors, and other shareholders. They are driven by purpose and vision, create a good culture internally and externally, have good values-focused leadership, and can easily answer the question "What difference would there be in the world if we didn't exist?"

The book examines how these (and other) companies exemplify conscious capitalism's four tenets: (a) have and keep to a strong vision for the company, (b) have value-focused leadership, (c) try as best as you can to take care of all stakeholders (investors, workers, customers, etc) rather than seeing them as antagonistic to each other, (d) create a strong culture internally and externally. Whole Foods, for instance, has a strong mission of bettering people's eating habits. Southwest Airlines has always gone out of its way to create a good and relatively egalitarian work environment. Google cares as much about creating beneficial tools that people can use as it does about increasing profits. Etc.

One of the areas Mackey touches on in the book's appendix, but I wish he'd focus on more - is convincing us that businesses practising conscious capitalism can be successful while doing good things. His appendix cites some good data available elsewhere, but doesn't really go much into that data. (And one has to wonder, if conscious capitalism is a good business strategy, why haven't more folks been 'doing' it a long time ago? After all, markets reward those who are successful. Jack Welch - about whom Mackey has nothing remotely positive to say, with good reason - successfully ran General Electric for many years with his very unconscious capitalism.) Of course, it does make sense that treating stakeholders well is good for business (customers will support those who treat them weil, workers will work harder and stay longer when they are happy, etc.) But I couldn't really see a skeptic being very convinced by this book. (One objection not spoken to: Mackey is clear that conscious capitalism sometimes requires sacrificing short-term gains for long-term gains, but, will one really be able to secure investors, pay distributors fairly, etc, if one is quick to subordinate short-term gains to anticipated long-term gains?)

Anyhow, this book was a pleasure to read. It is refreshing to see an author like Mackey defending the idea that one CAN do well by doing good, one CAN do good things for others and (unapologetically) make a profit. To this reader, at least, this is what capitalism and markets are supposed to be: companies and consumers voluntarily making positive sum transactions producing "mutual gains from trade."

This book should be required reading in all business schools.
By GKD
I found this book to be enormously inspiring. When I finished it, I felt as though I'd had an evangelical experience. It makes you wonder why business hasn't always been conducted in this way. I guess the answer is, because we didn't know any better. We had to evolve to this point, just as we've stopped pouring industrial waste into our rivers and no longer x-ray our feet at the shoe store.

I'm no tree-hugger. I'm not even that much of an environmentalist, but I do recognize a good idea when I read about it. We have a responsibility to our planet and to each other to make this world the best it can be. John Mackey may have amalgamated the ideas of a lot of other people, and he may even have co-opted the term "conscious capitalism" from Muhammad Yunus (I did my homework), but he deserves an enormous amount of credit for what he did do, i.e. put these ideas into practice and then bring them to public consciousness by writing his book.

I didn't know much about Mackey before reading the book, only what was in the news a few years ago about his postings on the Yahoo! message boards. At the time I thought his behavior reprehensible, but given that no charges were filed and that the buyout of Wild Oats was allowed to proceed (and now reflecting on his account of the events), I am inclined to believe that the "news" we were given was incomplete and more than a little tainted by the usual media spin.

In summary, I am completely taken with Mackey's ideas as expressed in his book and can only hope that the world takes notice. I must confess that as I read it I did have a sudden urge to break into a chorus of "Kum Ba Yah" from time to time. It can come across as a bit treacly. But it is a hopeful paradigm for the future of business.

Conscious Capitalism
By William and Melanie Grossman
I would not usually read a book like this. I'm a social worker, not a business person, but I am a Whole Foods fan, and go there just for the boost I get from the positive energy that abounds there. Truth be told, my daughter persuaded me to give the book a chance. I'm glad I did... As someone who has never worked in industry, the book helped me re-examine some of my premises, but did so in a non-judgmental or threatening way. I have dedicated my life to helping others, and this book showed how a conscious business can do the same, not by taking advantage of customers and employees, but by providing them with goods and opportunity they voluntarily wish to exchange time and money for. Not sure I am willing to change my political stripes at this point, but I did enjoy the opportunity to hear a different point of view explained with compassionate concern.

Life of the Party: Stories of a Perpetual Man-Child, by Bert Kreischer

A collection of outrageous stories by the standup comic, TV host, and inspiration for the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder

Bert Kreischer doesn't know how to say "no." If he did, he wouldn't have gotten himself mixed up with a group of Russian mobsters on a class trip to Moscow, earning him his nickname: "The Machine." He wouldn't have wrestled with a bear or swum with sharks on national television. He wouldn't have (possibly) smoked PCP with a star of Saturday Night Live. And he wouldn't have been named the Number One Partier in the Nation by Rolling Stone, inspired the movie National Lampoon's Van Wilder, or performed standup to sellout crowds across the country.

The stories Kreischer shares in Life of the Party are a guidebook on how not to grow up. From his fraternity days at Florida State University, to his rise as a standup, to his marriage and first brushes with fatherhood, Kreischer shows you a path that may not lead you to maturity or personal growth. But it will lead you to a shitload of fun.

Review

“The author's affability and self-deprecation only add to his charm, and the result is a genuinely hilarious look at life in the fast lane.” ―Publisher's Weekly

“Bert Kreischer is one of the great American wild men. A gonzo warrior driven not by cynicism or a desire to reveal dark truths but instead by a deep, almost essential, need to have a good time--no matter what. His stories track the trials and tribulations of a big-hearted dude trying to fit in, help out, party and find himself. After all is said and done we arrive with him at the true humility of joy.” ―Marc Maron, New York Times bestselling author of Attempting Normal

“Bert Kreischer is as fearless on the page as he is on the stage. Bert admits things in Life of the Party that most of us wouldn't even admit to ourselves. Open to page one and let Bert Kreischer take you on the magical ride. You'll laugh out loud frequently, feel uncomfortable occasionally, and even feel a little warm and fuzzy at the inner warmth of this perpetual man-child--but you will always, always be entertained.” ―Mick Foley, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Foley is Good

Seriously Funny
By Pamela Bowen
I saw Bert perform at Irvine Improv a couple of weeks before the book came out. He was hilarious, and plus,he told the guy I was with that night that I was a young hot blonde (I'm WAY over 40), so how could I turn him down when he asked us to consider purchasing his book in advance?! Bert had me laughing from page one. The first grade story is priceless and I'm still smiling about Danny, Dawn, and the ultimate honeymoon adventure. You HAVE to get this book. It's my favorite book purchase of the year so far. The thing is, he gets into as many shocking situations as Howard Stern, does things that are equally as crazy, but somehow, the story is presented with such a lack of cynicism that you just can't help but laugh and be happy! Even when he's robbing a train in Russia! Fair warning: Bert does not censor his words. THANK GOD!!

Bert Kreischers energy and personality put to paper
By Mattias Falk
A really fun read, my minor complaint is that it was short, Bert Kreischer obviously have got plenty more stories so the book could have been 100 pages longer.

The book gives you snippets of the life of Bert Kreischer, a man that does not know how to say no. There is stories from his childhood to today and everything in between, some stories I had heard before but now told in greater detail but most of stories were new to me. His life so far have been truly unique thanks to some part luck but mostly his personality. The book does not shy away from telling stories both of triumph and defeat, stories of pride and shame and stories of brilliance and idiocy. For example what I believe is Bert Kreischers most famous story, The Machine, is in there and it mixes all the elements above,

The book captures Bert Kreischers amazing and unique energy and I often found myself putting his laugh into the stories. I believe most people will find this a fun read but it will be even better if you have some experience with Bert Kreischers other projects; his Standup, his TV-shows or, maybe even better, his podcast. I will continue to follow Bert Kreischers career and hope for more amazing and fun stories in the future.

A Man and Machine in progress
By Shawn O'Neal
Have been a fan of Bert's since first hearing him on Jay Mohr's podcast a few years back and have since enjoyed his stand-up and listened to every episode of his podcast. In short, I think save for one or two, I have heard versions of all of these stories before ... and they were still brand new to me as he adds detail and feeling that isn't possible in other formats. The story is one of a man in progress and closing it as he did, with him coming off the road to deal with a family situation (no spoilers), I think sets up well for another book, where he deals with life as an adult as opposed to the adolescent and post-adolescent described in these pages. I know he has talked about writing a second and I look forward to it after devouring this one very quickly. One reviewer said he never grew up in this book. I'd disagree in part as you can see it happening in the end. That said, that was kind of the point: the man's in progress. When you are The Machine, stepping into the light can be tough, especially when that persona pays the bill. But it seems like that's what's happening, slowly but surely. I look forward to what's next.

Best RPG Supplement Yet!
By Amazon User
As an unrepentant nerd, I don't have an issue saying that I've got a few pen & paper games under my belt. I've played everything Wizards of the Coast came out with since 2000, have a fair bit of experience of AD&D, and some other, less prominent games as well. Chances are, if you're looking at this book, you've already played Paizo Publishing's Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, a game which many consider to be the spiritual successor to the Dungeons & Dragons saga. This book, in addition to presenting six new base classes to entice you with, also has taken the core classes (Barbarian through Wizard) and given each, on average about ten, ways to customize those base classes to whatever it is you've been dreaming of seeing your character doing. Do you like the ranger, but also like Animorphs? Now, you can take the ranger and turn him into an animal shape-shifter! Are you a fan of the paladin, but never find yourself using his small spell list? Trade spell-casting in for an aura of light that provides aid to you and your allies using the Warrior of the Holy Light archetype! Other options include the Drunken Master Monk, the court bard, the rake rogue, a slew of sub domains for clerics, new bloodlines for sorcerers, and sub-schools for wizards. There's something for every class.

Next, this book almost doubles the list of available feats. Remember that scene in Lord of the Rings where Legolas is firing arrows at the orc horde and suddenly takes an arrow and stabs an enemy that gets too close, before loading that same arrow and firing again? There's a feat for that. Do you like casting acid arrow at that demon over yonder, but hate his unnaturally lucky spell resistance rolls? Take another stab at evil when your spell bounces off and hits the next nearby enemy! Do you like playing the halfling, but are sick of being seen as just a half-pint? Do you love your half-orc, but hate the stares the commoners throw at her? Take the feat that lets you pass for human! Or embrace your heritage and give them something to stare at when you take a feat that gives your tusks enough of an edge to be considered weapons in their own right!

New prestige classes abound in this book. From the Battle Herald, a bardic cavalier that leads her allies to victory through inspiration and mounted prowess, to the Rage Prophet, a touch of Old Testament prophets that mean business for their god. If you like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, you'll love the Master Chymist Prestige class, built especially as a nice item for the Alchemist class (presented earlier in the book).

This book doesn't skimp on spells either. It's tough to go through and list the variety of options presented, but just know that there are spells for every class. Equipment has been added in as well, from the practical to the insane, you'll find that it isn't left wanting.

The book also takes the opportunity to add new rules to the game system, all optional. The developers said that this is a supplement. It's a compendium of advanced rules that can add flavor to a game.

All in all, it's a very complete book that provides variant options that almost everyone can enjoy and benefit from. It's one of the most complete supplemental books released for a Pen & Paper RPG to date and it's also earns every dime you spend on it. Unlike some previous addition "splat books" you won't feel like your money could have better been spent elsewhere. The Paizo team worked hard on this, taking in feedback from its user base (they beta released all the classes for anyone on the Paizo messageboard community to test and weigh in on) and built a masterpiece.

Must-have expansion to Pathfinder
By R. Newnham
The Pathfinder RPG's latest offering is an excellent addition to the game: a must-have. This book is very similar to the splatbooks that Wizards of the Coast (WotC) released for D&D 3.5, but without being confined to a small group of classes (and, frankly, without the garbage). The primary expanded areas are the addition of six new base classes, additional feats, additional class options, additional racial options, spells, prestige classes and combat options.

The class and racial options are primarily substitution-based. They work on the principal of swapping a power for another, in most cases. This feels a lot better to me than defining a new race that is marginally different and trying to shoehorn them into an existing campaign world, as WotC has done many times. As for the class options, the substitutions are usually a package. The Ranger is expanded by adding several new combat styles (which I love, by the way), for example. The cleric options are the addition of subdomains, which are easy to integrate becaus the existing domains each have 2-3 associated subdomains which swap domain powers. I've always loved the idea of customizing characters, and I feel this book really opens up possibilities.

The new classes are excellent. I admit that I am not crazy about the Alchemist, but the others are top-notch. The remaining additions are the Cavalier (a fighter-type with bardic powers, focusing on challenging single foes and inspiring friends), the Inquisitor (a deity-sworn hunter), the Summoner (class focused on summoning a pet; think World of Warcraft Warlock), the Oracle (a divination-themed spontaneous divine caster) and the Witch (a hex-throwing caster whose familiar is her living spellbook). I honestly could see playing any one of these and having a blast, particularly the Inquisitor and the Witch. These all have distinct roles, none of which seem to step on the toes of existing classes. Their power also seems in sync with the other PFRPG classes (unlike the classes in the WotC splatbooks).

The feats and prestige classes, while largely obligatory in a book of this type, avoid cheesiness. They expand the game well, and they make sure that the new base classes have the options the core ones were provided. Also of note are teamwork feats. WotC has offered these before, and basically, they are feats that are only useful when an ally has the same feat. I have always ignored these feats outright, but Pathfinder has made it so that two of the new base classes (Inquisitor and Cavalier) utilize these and either allow a player to grant use of one (a Cavalier power) or make so that your character acts as though your allies had the feat (Inquisitor). Without integration like these, these feats would largely be a waste of space. The prestige classes largely give advancement potential for new base classes, though some are the remaining PFRPG equivalents of the base 3.5 prestige classes (from the D&D 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide).

All said, I feel this book was worth every cent. I fully expect to use some of these options the next time I make a Pathfinder character. This book exemplifies the PFRPG's commitment to quality gaming material, and I recommend it highly.

A great addition for any Pathfinder game, but not perfect
By P. Reed
The APG adds a ton of new options for players, including new base classes, alternate class features for older base classes, new feats, spells, prestige classes, and so on. There's also new items, magical equipment, and optional rules for groups that want to change things up a little bit. The best part is that overall they're very well balanced; I could complain that some of the options are a little underpowered, actually, but nothing sticks out to me as being overpowered (certainly nothing comes as close as, say, Candles of Invocation, which are in the core rulebook!).

Pathfinder seems to be taking an opposite approach from 3.5 D&D to some class balance issues; in 3.5, most of the base classes were terribly weak beyond the low levels, and there was no reason to not go into prestige classes as soon as possible. Pathfinder has significantly improved upon the base classes and toned down the prestige classes, to the point that in some cases there is little reason to take levels in a particular prestige class unless you just really like the flavor of it.

My most significant complaint is that some of the new options seem redundant. The oracle, for example, in terms of mechanics is very much like a cleric but just not as good. The flavor of the class is nice, sure, but flavor and mechanics can be kept separate; there's nothing stopping somebody from putting "cleric" on their character sheet but dressing up as and calling themselves an oracle in-game. Summoner has a similar problem in that it's just too similar to the basic wizard class; they have a fun, unique mechanic, but it seems like it could have easy been done as a prestige class for wizards instead. On the other hand, alchemist, witch, and cavalier are fine classes, even if the cavalier may have difficulty fitting into campaigns that aren't mount-friendly. Inquisitors are a fun concept, but seem mechanically weak; they're jacks-of-all-trades, so they suffer the same problem that bards do in that they're masters of none, except that a well-built bard /can/ be a master of various trades. So far there doesn't really seem to be a lot of options for Inquisitors to focus themselves, but hopefully that will come in future books. In an embarrassing gaffe, one of the Inquisitor's higher-level abilities is actually completely useless because it refers to a mechanic the pre-release version of the class had that was removed from the final version.

The optional class features for the old base classes are generally pretty great. Reminiscent of 2nd edition D&D's kits, you can swap various class abilities in order to change the focus of the class. Every class gets a lot of fun options; for example, there's a Sniper variant for rogues where they become worse at trapfinding but better at ranged combat, and they can increase the range in which they can sneak attack. Monks get the class Drunken Master option that makes them more powerful as they become inebriated. Another option of note is anti-paladin, which is, to be blunt, disappointing. It's basically a copy of the paladin class that replaces "good" with "evil" and "law" with "chaos." They're perfectly functional characters, mechanically, but I feel let down that nothing was done to make them feel unique rather than just an evil clone.

The new feats, spells, and prestige classes are all pretty nice. I just wish there were more prestige classes, really; there's eight of them, and they're all pretty interesting, although many of them have a very narrow focus that makes them only viable for specific character builds. That's not necessarily a bad thing, it just leaves me wanting more. As mentioned earlier, my only real complaint here is that some of them feel a little weak; they all have some kind of tradeoff, and it's hard to tell if it's worth it. The Holy Vindicator, for example, is a really cool concept for melee-oriented clerics, but over 10 levels they only get 7 levels of improved spellcasting, and, of course, it doesn't advance cleric domains at all. Their abilities are nice, but honestly I don't think they make up for losing 10 levels of domain progression and 3 levels of spellcasting. Nonetheless, it's not /too/ bad a tradeoff, and I could definitely see myself doing it for flavor reasons. Then there's the Stalwart Defender, which is mostly a clone of the 3.5 Dwarven Defender, down to the fact that they're weak against enemies who just ignore them and walk past them. They get a lot of defensive abilities, but no offensive abilities, and unlike World of Warcraft, in Pathfinder monsters have no reason to concentrate on a player who isn't actually a threat. I probably sound like I'm complaining a lot, but I really do like a lot of them, particularly the Master Chymist; they have sort of a Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde thing going on, where they actually develop a separate personality that can take over when they combat and force them to mutate.

Anyway, overall this is a great book, and every Pathfinder group will want to have at least one to share amongst the players. Sometimes it feels like Paizo was trying to play it a little /too/ safe and ended up making some options not as strong as the rest, but the concepts and flavor are great throughout the book.

Great advice
By T. Bruce Tyndall
As an aspiring tattoo artist, I learned a lot of good tips reading Hermit's books. Really goes in to details about a lot of things I've had questions on. Special focus on clean working habits which is all too important in this day and time.

Very Informative
By Tom Agnetti
Since I could not find much on the specifics of tattooing I found this to be invaluable. I have taken ink to a willing grapefruit and this book helped a lot. I have been an artist for over 25 years and always had an interest in tattooing, but due to my lack of knowledge or access to a local shop had never had the confidence to press forward trying to apply my love for art to this technique.
I will say after being discouraged by many sites and individuals and their insistence that the wizardry craft of tattooing not be disclosed to mere mortals, unless I apprentice like Harry Potter or something and scrub their toilets and sweep while learning, I was very pleased to find a resource like this available to a 40 something looking to learn the specifics of tattooing.

Thanks for all the info.

Bare Basics
By GabeOz
Bought on a whim one late night to use as a quick reference on my Kindle and wish I hadn't now. I did give it three stars because it could be a very useful book for the 'very' young beginners who are pretty clueless. I'm far, far, far from professional as I've never apprenticed and have only tattooed myself, my mother (ex-nun & accidental coke shorter.. long story but awesome lady) and one paying customer but as inexperienced as I am, I found very little useful information. All the information contained in this book would readily be available via a quick internet search of "How to tattoo". My biggest complaint (if only there were truly useful info. in the book) would be that the ebook has no linked table of contents for quick navigation.. though considering the lack of useful information, this doesn't much hamper the reader. In short, save your money and rely instead on internet searches.
