About the Author
David Quantick really has written everything. He is part of the writing team for HBO's multi-award winning show Veep, for which he won the 2015 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series.

As a television writer, he has written for The Thick Of It, The Day Today, Brass Eye, TV Burp and many other shows. As a radio writer, he created Radio 4's One and Radio 2's The Blagger's Guide. His novel Sparks was described as "excellent" by Neil Gaiman and his graphic series Louis Wain (created with Savage Pencil) was published in Alan Moore's Dodgem Logic. After dispelling 17 myths about abusive personalities, he sheds light on the origin of the abuser's values and beliefs, which he finds to be a better explanation of abusive behavior than reference to psychological problems. what a great book!

The question "why did the person who claimed to love me so much attempt to destroy me" has led me to read and think a lot about the contents of hundreds of books. This is one of the best I have read. Lundy Bancroft gives a very simple and sensible answer: entitlement and lack of respect. The abuser feels entitled to a fantasy woman, who will gratefully smooth the way for him, providing him with a financial support, a clean, comfortable house, good food, unconditional emotional support, and a perfect, attractive, sex partner willing to do anything to please him. To obtain this, all he has to do is attract and court a woman who he fantasizes is going to make this happen. Saying the words "I love you" and a year or so of good behavior is a pretty cheap price to obtain a perfect servant for life. When the woman, who has no idea of his agenda, fails to live up to his fantasy, he concludes that he has been ripped off, that she has lied to him and failed him, and then he proceeds to try to destroy her. He may shove her, hit her, scream at her, or try to make her feel worthless or even insane. This is called devaluation. Lundy Bancroft lists the warning signs of a potentially abusive suitor, and a lot of misery would be eliminated if dating women were given this list to memorize. As well as explaining what motivates abusers, the book also reveals a lot about the methodical tactics of abuse that I did not find in many other books, particularly mind-boggling yet common tactics such as gaslighting the victim and alienating the victim from her friends and family through lies and manipulation. Abuse is not just physical violence. The chapter on how the abuser gets others such as the police and court officials to help in his abuse is simply horrifying. I would highly recommend this book to teens and women dating, women who feel that their partner is emotionally or physically abusing them, and therapists, police, and court personnel.

The most practical book about abuse on the market

I have read about 7 books about abuse, and this one is the best. The book is comprehensive, and is excellent at illustrating the uniqueness and personality traits of abusers and the wide range of tactics that they employ. This focus on abuse was helpful to me, because in other books I read that attempted to categorize abusive men, I had a hard time categorizing my psychologically abusive ex-husband, who didn't seem to fit neatly into any category that the author listed - which really frustrated me and planted seeds of doubt about my knowledge of abuse. This book made clear that abusive men don't necessarily neatly fit into categories, but draw from different categories and that each specializes in an area(s) of control particular to his own individual personality. This book does not go into great depth about why abusers do what they do - there are other authors who do explore that in great depth (Patricia Evans comes to mind). Mr. Bancroft's book is extremely practical. It does a great job of explaining how the legal system treats abusers, and what abused women need to be on the alert for, which is exremely useful, as most women end up leaving their abusers and having to deal with him legally. The book does a great job at making it clear that even experts in the field of psychology often don't understand abusers - that only the abused and people who specialize in working with abusers truly know how manipulative abusers are. And Mr. Bancroft does this without being arrogant -he talks about how he even he fell prey to their tactics in the early years of running his program. I think that the reviewers who have canned this book are likely abusive - they saw themselves in this book and are in denial. There are many books about abuse that use examples of abuse that are pretty minimal, borderline, trivial, real gray zones that we could all see ourselves slip into - and this book isn't one of those. The reason that so many reviewers say this book is male-bashing and point out that women abuse too, is because women abuse differently than do men. The kinds of abuse in this book are the kinds of abusive tactics that men employ. IF you want to read about the kinds of abusive tactics that women employ, read Dr. Laura's books.

This book hit the nail on the head...

During my marriage of 20+ years, I devoured uncountable marriage self-help books. Strangely, I couldn't figure out why NONE of these books seemed to cover the issues that I was having with my husband. Then I ordered this book and realized why. I didn't see these patterns as abuse since I had been raised around it and lived with it for so many years, I just thought they were typical problems people experience in marriage. I acknowledge that marriage takes a lot of work but after reading this book, I realized that 98% of it applied to my life experiences directly and hit the nail right on the head, over and over.
If fact, as I was reading this book, I would get mad and slam it down, because the abuse was as plain as day and yet, I couldn't see it. This book spelled it out for me and things couldn't have been any clearer.

During the month that I was reading this book, my husband was really on his toes, being a good boy. I didn't hide the fact that I was reading it. In fact, I would recommend things to him from the book for him to try to improve on areas of our relationship. But even though he was being on his best behavior, I KNEW it was a front and that things would go back the way they were. So 1 year ago this month, I left him and haven't look back since. I never realized a person can be SO happy and fulfilled, even while going through a divorce (I am like all smiles in the courthouse ~ amazing!).
Then I gave him the book and told him to find himself in it, and if he couldn't, then to realize that he's been living in denial all these years and needs professional help. Of course, he hasn't read it AND he won't get professional help. But I am on my way to a healthy and fulfilled life, without being abused any more.

This book made THE MAJOR difference over every book I had ever read. I was in shock at how true almost every single paragraph was to my life. Thank you SO MUCH for making this book! If you are even reading about this book, then deep inside you know in your heart that there is an issue that needs to be solved in your life. I encourage you to buy this book right away and let your eyes be opened. I was crying not because I was unhappy or abused, I was crying at how exactly truthful this book was to my life when NO OTHER BOOK relationship book even came close. I was crying at how could this intelligent, successful woman I am be so blind to what was going on in my life. Please get this book.

I'm Hooked

I had heard of Flat Stlanley before and although I thought the concept was cute I had never used this book in my second grade. At least not until this year. I am using it with one of my flexible reading groups. I'm absolutely hooked and the children are as well. We have posted the pros and cons of being flat and have joined in with the Flat Stanley project. This is providing so many enriching extension activities! We are now "hosting" Flat Stanleys from Ontario, Thailand, and Australia. The learning that is taking place (writing, reading, speaking, creating, geography, world cultures) is astounding. My students are constructing their own Stanleys who will be traveling around the world to be hosted in other states and countries. I will be buying more copies of this book so I can do this with my entire class next year. I purchased Stanley in Space for my reading group to move on to next. I can't believe I was not aware of how wonderful this book could be. I have been able to integrate it throughout my curriculum. HIGHLY recommended!

Truly memorable

Finally I've found Flat Stanley!! I read this wonderful book when I was a small child and was thrilled by Stanley's situation. In fact, it is one of the only stories I can still vividly recall from my TV-infested childhood. (And it still affects me-- to this day I have NEVER put a bulletin board above my bed or anything big for that matter!!!).

As I grew older, I lost track of my copy of the book-- but would always ask friends if they remembered it when the converstation turned to children's literature. Surprisingly, not many people had heard of the story-- which, of course, inspired me to find the book and bring back a classic to my friends, nieces and nephews.

So, I scoured bookstores old and new to find it. And I was without luck-- until now. With the help of my computer and Amazon.com I have, again, found Flat Stanley. So, I'm ordering a bunch of copies-- for myself and my family-- and I'm thrilled that Stanley will find a place once again on my bookshelf -- and will hopefully remain there for years to come.

I can't wait for him to get here!!!

Awesome, awesome book

The best children's books are the ones that tickle their readers years beyond their copyright dates: the ones whose illustrations delight, whose stories enchant, and whose lessons endure. Flat Stanley, Jeff Brown and Tomi Ungerer's timeless tale of a paper-thin lad, is among them.

Squashed by a bulletin board that toppled during his sleep, Stanley Lambchop wakens to find himself half an inch thick, though thoroughly unharmed. While massive hunk of wood's crushing a sleeping child sounds potentially frightening, the reactions of Stanley's parents reinforce the notion that this book is a fanciful one, not in the least bit scary. "Darndest thing I've ever seen," his father remarks. His mother, admirably unperturbed, suggests, "Let's all have breakfast. Then Stanley and I will go to Doctor Dan and hear what he has to say."

Yes, Stanley's mother takes her son to the doctor's office, where a pretty nurse takes the boy's measurements while his father toils "at the office." When Mr. Lambchop comes home from work, his wife greets him with a sigh. "You're at the office all day, having fun. You don't realize what I go through with the boys. They're very difficult." Such gender stereotyping will likely displease today's mothers, though it is doubtful that most readers' indignation will measurably interfere with their enjoyment of the tale.

Indeed, the story captures the world of 1964, the year of its publication, most astutely. Written at the height of the civil rights movement, Brown's story addresses the era's most pressing issue with subtle effectiveness. When other children mock Stanley, jeering, "Hello, Super-Skinny," Mrs. Lambchop comforts her son. "Shame on them," she contends. "It is wrong to dislike people for their shapes. Or their religion, for that matter, or the color of their skin." When Stanley suggests, "Only, maybe it's impossible for everybody to like everybody," she replies that "at least they can try." Brown also delicately addresses Stanley's little brother's envy of his flat sibling. The author weaves the lessons into his story so seamlessly that even an adult reader might not notice them, and their understated nature keeps the book from sounding preachy.

While Flat Stanley's serious side deserves commendation, it is its playfulness that has made it so popular. Children will adore the book's fancy. The valiant, two-dimensional protagonist explores sewers, flies as a kite, nabs a pair of "sneak thieves," and travels to California in an oversized envelope. Brown's imagination amazes. And while they will enjoy the capers he concocts, parents will appreciate more the author's wit. Dry and matter-of-fact, the humor will elicit appreciative chuckles from mature readers. When Stanley tell his doctor that he felt a bit tingly after he was squashed, for example, the physician notes importantly, "Well, that's mostly how it is with these cases" and goes on to admit, "Sometimes we doctors, for all our years of training and experience, can only marvel at how little we know."

Tomi Ungerer's ink drawings perfectly complement the story's silliness. Lightheartedly imprecise and messy, his sketches convey emotion better than more lifelike pictures might. Free from reality's constraints, the illustrator evidently immensely enjoyed drawing sourpuss policemen, befuddled doctors, resentful little brothers, and alarmed art thieves. Ungerer's muted tones, though, limit the pictures' potential. Dreary brown dominates too many of the pages; when he uses vivacious hues like green and blue and pink, the drawings burst with cheer.

The New York Times blasted Flat Stanley, Brown's first picture book, in its initial review, accusing the author of doing "a great disservice to children everywhere." But the book has since accumulated a large following. Canada is even home to The Flat Stanley Project, which promotes literacy by encouraging students to mail their own Flat Stanleys around the world to different schools. At each stop, the students record his adventures. The paper cutouts have dogsledded in Alaska, flown in Saudi Arabian airplanes, and sightseen in Paris. Flat Stanley continues to charm young readers two decades after its publication, and it will for many more to come.

About the Author
Stephen Cave is a senior research fellow at the University of Cambridge and a director of the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence. He has also served as a British diplomat and written widely on philosophical and scientific issues, including for the Atlantic and the New York Times. Stephen lives in Berlin, Germany.

The author presents very good arguments showing there is no soul

A very well-written book. The author presents very good arguments showing there is no soul, no reincarnation and no immortality.

For example, Chapter 7: “The Lost Soul”
Pages 186-187.

If your optic nerves in your brain are sufficiently badly damaged, you will no longer be able to see –- you will go blind. This tells us very clearly that the faculty of sight is dependent upon functioning optic nerves. Yet curiously, when many people imagine their soul leaving their body, they imagine being able to see -– they imagine, for example, looking down on their own corpse or on their own funeral procession. They believe, therefore, that their immaterial soul has the faculty of sight. But if the soul can see when the entire brain and body have stopped working, why can’t it see when only the optic nerves have stopped working? In other words, if blind people have a soul that can see, why are they blind?

This question has no satisfactory answer, and indeed some thoughtful theologians, such as Thomas Aquinas, have accepted that a soul without a body cannot see -– seeing is something that is done by a body and brain with eyes and optic nerves in working order.

But we now know that, just as damage to the optic nerve can destroy the faculty of sight, so damage to other parts of the brain can destroy faculties like memory and reason. Increasingly, evidence suggests that all aspects of the mind and personality are in this way dependent on the brain. So, paralleling our question about the blind person, we can ask about someone with brain damage who is unable to think rationally or feel emotions:
“If they actually have a soul that is able to think rationally or feel emotions, why can’t they think rationally or feel emotions? Why would localized brain damage stand in the way when destruction of the whole brain and body does not?”

" Immortality" is the fascinating and thought-provoking book about life, death and civilization. It's about humankind's quest by one or a combination of four paths that promise immortality and whether any of these paths can deliver on that promise. Finally, with the newfound wisdom it's about following a philosophy of life that provides us with a meaningful existence. Stephen Cave holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Cambridge University and a writer who skillfully provides the reader with a gem of a book that is enlightening and a joy to read. This 338-page book is broken out into four parts that correspond to the four narratives of immortality and a conclusion: Part I. Staying Alive, Part II. Resurrection, Part II. Soul, and Part IV. Legacy.

Positives:
1. A well written, accessible book for the masses.
2. A mesmerizing topic: immortality. The author treats the topic with utmost care and respect.
3. A fantastic format that follows logically with the author's overall thesis.
4. The four immortality narratives: Staying Alive, Resurrection, Soul, and Legacy. The entire book revolves around these four main paths.
5. The author clearly presents three main goals upfront and thoroughly succeeds in achieving them.
6. Each chapter begins with an interesting historical vignette in which the author highlights the main topic of the chapter.
7. In the first path of immortality the author goes through a number of examples that clearly show how the determination to stay alive and reproduce is one thing that all life forms have in common.
8. The Morality Paradox. The immortality narratives were created to resolve the paradox.
9. Great use of secular, religious and scientific viewpoints to go through all the arguments. Great stuff!
10. Thought-provoking quotes and ideas: "These psychologists were testing the hypothesis that we have developed our cultural worldviews in order to protect ourselves from the fear of death". Interesting.
11. The author goes through various and diverse civilizations to explain his thesis. Thus keeping the book fresh and interesting. "Civilization is built on the promise of immortality".

Negatives:
1. No formal bibliography.
2. A notes section was provided but it was not linked to the body of the book.
3. The author overstays his welcome a tad with the last chapter. That is, it was too long and started becoming preachy but if that's the worst thing I can find about this book well you know you got yourself a gem.
4. Charts and illustrations would have added value. For example, a chart illustrating the worldview on immortality would have been welcomed.

In summary, I really enjoyed this book. First of all, this is philosophy at its best. It asks the big questions and it follows a path that is logical and reasonable. It tackles fascinating topics surrounding immortality and it ends with a satisfying conclusion. My favorite part of this book was Part III. The Soul; finally, an author who spends some time addressing the soul in a comprehensive manner. This book was a real treat for me, treat yourself and get it! I highly recommend it.
