While the setting is Soviet Russia, the backdrop is Shakespeare: A mad king has a diabolical plan to exterminate and deport his country's remaining Jews. Levinson's cast of unlikely heroes includes Aleksandr Kogan, a machine-gunner in Levinson's Red Army band who has since become one of Moscow's premier surgeons; Friederich Lewis, an African American who came to the USSR to build smelters and stayed to work as an engineer, learning Russian, Esperanto, and Yiddish; and Kima Petrova, an enigmatic young woman with a score to settle. And wandering through the narrative, like a crazy Soviet Ragtime, are such historical figures as Paul Robeson, Solomon Mikhoels, and Marc Chagall.

About the Author
Paul Goldberg was born in Moscow in 1959 and emigrated to the U.S. at age 14. An award-winning investigative reporter, he is the editor and publisher of The Cancer Letter, a weekly publication focused on the business and politics of cancer. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and elsewhere, and he has been featured on 60 Minutes, 20/20, CNN and NPR. He is the author of two books on the Soviet human rights movement, The Final Act and The Thaw Generation (with Ludmilla Alexeyeva), and co-author (with Otis Brawley) of a book about the American healthcare system, How We Do Harm. The Yid is his first novel.

a long time since I read a novel this captivating

My daughter in Colorado gave me this book, telling me it came highly recommended. She knows I am a Yiddish speaker, and our family emigrated from Russia at the beginning of the 20th century.
I sat down to read it that day and had finished it by the next morning. I brought it back to her and told her it was brilliant, and thanked her profusely.
I wouldn't necessarily call this an alternative history; Stalin dies when and where he did historically. The historical background is appropriately described, from GOSET to the Doctors' Plot to the planned holocaust cum pogrom. The truly unexpected part is the gallows humor that makes the reader laugh aloud, even as the most horrifying things are happening, or projected to happen.
Anyone who loves languages will be delighted by this book. On every other page, at least, there are Russian or Yiddish sentences. Goldberg transliterates them, and makes sure a monolingual English speaker understands what's going on. I understood the Yiddish; I don't speak Russian, but the transliteration and translation made it all clear.
I would like to point out that Yiddish is no more "sprinkled about" the novel than Russian. I'm afraid Americans (especially American Jews) seem to consider Yiddish a long, running joke rather than a language. Goldberg knows better. And when a sentence in Yiddish appears in the novel, there is an artistic reason for it to be there.
The references to "King Lear" are not an attempt to make the novel into 20th-century ersatz Shakespeare. Rather, they are references to the brilliant Moscow State Jewish Theater (shut down in 1948), its actor-director Solomon Mikhoels (ordered murdered by Stalin in 1948) and its famous Yiddish production of "King Lear."
I could not choose a term "that best describes the mood" - there is not one term that adequately describes a novel this complex. Horrifying, dark, suspenseful, thoughtful - by ludic, comic, and nostalgic as well. It has been a long time since I read something this good.

A Couple of old Jews Save the World, Really

FAntastic , funny , suspenseful, with Yiddish phrases. The last days of Stalin as maybe it could have happened, and his death didn't come a day too soon. You know that he died, but is this how? After reading this book I sure hope so. A musing on anti-Semitism, the horrors of War that bind and shape people,even American Racism, all wound up in a caper to stop a second Holocaust [which could have happened].

Original, fascianting

Fascinating! Original!
Obviously, it "spoke" to me on a personal level since I am a Russian Jew, emigrated from Moscow in '79 at the age of 20. Many places and names were very familiar (Malakhovka, Kuntsevo, all of center of Moscow...). I even met the widow of Alexis Granovsky, founder of GOSET.
I do hope that despite such specific references this book would be read and appreciated by American readers, not necessarily of Jewish or Russian background, but anyone who appreciates alternative history, dark humor, theater, "Inglorious Basterds", Gogol, Bulgakov, Pushkin, Shakespeare etc. Or has heard of Paul Robeson.Or "King Lear".
I hope such associations will whet your curiosity. It is well worth it.
