Forced to purchase

In this day and age, I can't remember when I last looked something up in a manual that I couldn't find online in a fraction of a second. The only reason I purchased this microwave sized manual was due to the fact that it was required for my licensing exam. This is just another scheme by those antiquated businessmen in our midst who find it necessary to test our skills in such a way that even they would find absurd if placed in the same predicament.

Loved it from the start.

When I started reading this I was intrigued by her secret, she was a good girl who tried to do the right thing only to have justice let her down. Now she was scrambling to find a way out of the problem so her mom isn't hurt. When she meets Giovanni its seems to be the answer to her prayers, she has no idea how much. Wheen they both develop feelings and she finally opens up to him everything falls into place, I laughed and cried reading this Love all of Penny Wydlers books, well done .

Excellent coated paper stock, with bright colors and slick finish. Printing details sharpest of UK rail books I have received. Extensive Index to old and new maps fits well with Beeching "Reshaping UK Railway" report. One appreciates the British sacrifices required to endure through WWII with a rail system stretched to its limits. Robust surface roads and truck transportation were not to come until the end of "Steam" but these 2015 era rail maps illustrate what survives.

About the Author

Hermann Hesse was born in Germany in 1877 and later became a citizen of Switzerland. As a Western man profoundly affected by the mysticism of Eastern thought, he wrote novels, stories, and essays bearing a vital spiritual force that has captured the imagination and loyalty of many generations of readers. His works include Steppenwolf, Narcissus and Goldmund, and The Glass Bead Game. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. Hermann Hesse died in 1962.

We all feel like steppenwolves at some point

This novel is supposedly the writings of Harry Haller, a lonely intellectual who feels isolated from the rest of the world. The story is the account of his existential transformation. Beyond the plot, it is an exploration, a painful one, on the hollowness, emptiness and meaninglessness of life. It talks about how lonely we really are, in the confusing and unexplainable world in which we live. It also talks about the desperation routine brings on, the fakeness of love, the necessity of death. But, in the final analysis, it also shows a probably undeserved love for life. This is not a simple "grunge" book: it's thoughtful philosophy expressed in a fine literary piece of work, which shows vividly some concepts that sometimes formal philosophy renders in abstract and obscure ways.
Harry Haller, the steppenwolf, will meet a simple woman who takes him into the life of the flesh and the simplicity of people. This is very important: Haller comes to realize, in an intuitive more than analytical way, how we all humans feel the same loneliness and confusion, but how most of us manage to live and somehow enjoy many aspects of being alive.
This is an intelligent, deep and moving novel. It is not always pleasant, but then again life is not always pleasant either. Steppenwolf is perhaps the novel in which Hesse best sums up many of the points made in his other novels, previous or subsequent. It is the round-up of a clear and interesting philosophy of life. No wonder people, especially young people, keep finding inspiration, advice and healing in his works. Maybe I shouldn't give it five stars, for it can't be compared with top-level literary masterpieces; but I think literature's importance is not only and not always stylistical. The content is important too, and at least for me, this is one of the most inspiring and memorable novels I've ever read.

I've put off writing a review for this book....

....because it meant so very much to me during a dark time in my life. I never realized how much of what we learn to see in ourselves as odd, strange, unacceptable, mentally ill, or whatnot makes perfect poetic-daimonic sense to an underground but vital chunk of fellow human beings like Hermann Hesse.
What's the book about? About one man's journey into the hell of his own being, paralleled only by the hell of a world he finds no home in; words from Hesse's DEMIAN come to mind: "My story is not a pleasant one....It is a story of nonsense and chaos, madness and dreams--like the lives of all men who stop deceiving themselves."
It's been years since I first came across this remarkable novel of the archetypally lonely man aptly named the Steppenwolf, and yet I still recall so much of it, especially the Author's Note which Hesse wrote when he felt the book was being misunderstood: pointing out that Harry Haller's (Hermann Hesse's) sufferings were opposed by a "positive, serene, superpersonal and timeless world of faith," Hesse adds, "May everyone find in it what strikes a chord in him and is of some use to him! But I would be happy if many of them were to realize that the story of the Steppenwolf pictures a disease and crisis--but not one leading to death and destruction, on the contrary: to healing."

A message of warning

I couldn't have read this book at a better time. Like a lot of American high-schoolers in the "fast track" to college, I was feeling way overworked. I never had time anymore to enjoy nature, good books or anything else. It seemed that my life was school, and nothing else.
On a whim, I picked this up. "Beneath the Wheel," or "Unterm Rad" (auf Deutsch) is the story of a brilliant young man (in the prodigy sense) who is worked to death by those who unconsciously care nothing for him, but to see his advancement.
While I never experienced anything as extreme as Hans, this book really made me question why I was doing what I was doing. Why was I working myself to death in high school? Was I learning anything? Was I growing as a person?
This book is wonderful because Hesse tells the story is such a simple and poetic way; and it is translated marvelously. Simply a joy to read. I can read it over and over again. So, take heed, reader. Enjoy this book and spend many an afternoon questioning the merits of forced education; and different systems of learning. A good technical follow-up is "Teaching As A Subersive Activity." Check it out.

Absolutely too far fetched

I have forgotten how often Max was brutally attacked and was clear headed and lucid shortly thereafter. Nobody gets hit over the head with a champagne bottle without serious injury requiring medical attention.
As well, I cannot envision unarmed police officers going into a house not knowing what is facing them .
This book has more items for discussion than I can count.
I won't buy this author again.

Plotting D, characterization B. Disappointing compared to the first Max Wolfe book

I was so impressed by Tony Parsons's first Max Wolfe novel last year (titled The Murder Man in the US and The Murder Bag in the UK) that I couldn't wait for the next one. I love Tony Parsons's writing style and his main character, but I had a lot of problems with the plot of The Slaughter Man.

When I began listening to the audiobook of The Slaughter Man, I smiled to hear, once again, Colin Mace's perfect voicing of the first-person narrative. The Detective Constable Max Wolfe character is such a good one. A copper who knows how bad the world can be but hasn't become completely cynical; a single father devoted to his little girl, Scout, and their Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Stan; a guy who loves boxing as the sweet science, not for its brutality. Refreshingly, Max Wolfe is an interesting guy without being an alcoholic or drug abuser.

As with The Murder Man, The Slaughter Man begins with a prologue that graphically describes a horrific crime. In the current book, the crime is the murder of the wealthy Wood family, including father, mother and two teenage children, and the abduction of their young son. The book's plot takes two paths: the solution of the murderers and the attempt to find the little boy, Bradley.

As a fan of police procedurals, this plot often made me crazy. I can't say too much without spoilers, but I can say that it depends way too much on the fact that several (yes, several!) of the characters don't tell what they know, and on the cops being just plain thick. There is some fundamental sloppiness in procedure, and on multiple occasions Max wades into danger without calling for backup, even though there is time. He escapes impossible situations and injuries that should have killed him or at least hospitalized him but, unbelievably, somehow he's on his feet and even boxing in nothing flat. Sheesh.

Again, I can't say much without spoilers, but almost nothing about the Bradley plot makes sense. On top of that, the direction that investigation takes Max is lurid and repulsive.

This was a real letdown after The Murder Man. I like the Max Wolfe character enough to give the next book a try, but I hope Parsons will do a much better job of plotting. I'm also hopeful he can go for a less sensationalistic murder plot, and one with less sexual violence.

In a comment below, I'm going to post some VERY spoiler-y notes about things that bothered me in the book. Don't read the comment if you don't want to read spoilers.

Stupid.

I agree pretty much with Maine Colonial's review, although am feeling less charitable. The investigation of the crime had two principal features: Max's stupid mistakes and Tony Parson's research. Neither were interesting, but I will say that Max paid for his mistakes. Over and over he gets the holy hell beat out of him, simply because he ignores normal, sensible police procedure.

This seems to be part of a larger pattern in Brit cop novels, and to a lesser degree ours. The books are more and more becoming torture porn directed at the cops. It's not that the cops get beat up; it's that they get the crap beat out of them again and again. It strikes me that something perverse formed in the relationship between British readers, writers and police, with the writers expressing total contempt for the cops presumably on behalf of the readers. And particularly odd about it is that it's totally ignored by the ad writers and promo persons. Of Slaughter Man it is said of Max Wolfe that he's a two fisted hero, but actually he's a reckless wimp; a punk. As are his fellow cops, who also take a beating.

So if anyone who happens to read this is familiar with the British zeitgeist and has any ideas about their near addiction to torture porn, please comment and lets talk about it.

Practically useless

I got this book after transitioning from Autosketch to Visio Pro due to integration with other software.
I ordered this book after realizing that Visio is based on markedly different concepts than Autodesk products. This book is pretty much a clone of the material that is available for free at the Microsoft Visio website.
Anyone who has dabbled with CAD programs before will know that drawing aids like Snap, Alignment and Guides are rudimentary tools, without which, you have no hope of creating even a simple drawing - Try looking up Snap in the index, it's not there. Instead, the authors think that they can teach you the program by giving you step by step instructions on a few sample applications. These sample applications only take you to the most basic of steps and then leave you on your own.
Looking through the help menu will serve you way better.

Better books are available - buy one of them instead

I had a good experience with one of the "Step by Step" books a few years ago, but this one was pretty disappointing. The text and exercises are helpful only at the most basic level. While I knew it was an introductory book, I did not realize just HOW basic it would be. If you've never seen Visio before, you may find it of some use, but it will be of absolutely no value as a desk reference after it's been read.

In addition, it is supposed to be a paperback book with a CD that, in addition to practice files, includes an eBook version for the buyer's convenience. That makes a good selling point for this product, but it is misleading. Only 60% of the book is in hard copy, the remaining chapters are stored in individual PDF files on the accompanying CD along with the eBook (which also contains only 60% of the content). I did not expect or want to be tied to my desktop computer in order to read the last 40% of the book (a total of 4 chapters).

Overall, Microsoft Visio 2007 Step by Step was poor choice and I would not recommend it to anyone.

A: I wanted to write a series of stories that mirrored the books I liked to read in my childhood. Silvers did it again. The series just keeps getting better. Fans of classical mythology will appreciate the references throughout the book--especially since they are not overly explained. I like the level of intelligence and literary familiarity assumed by the author. It's also funny--the kind of "snort back a chortle of laughter in the middle of the night so as to not awaken the sleeping spouse who might chide one for reading until the wee hours" kind of funny. The main character, Nathan Temple, has been the star of the first two books. I am hoping to find out more about all of remaining cast of characters in subsequent books--or books just about them. Well done. Silvers is on my auto-buy list.

Enjoyed the story but not the foul language

Blood Debts is a fantastic second book in the Nate Temple series!! A bit slow around the middle, but happily that didn't last long. Terrific storyline.
I have only one complaint; the large increase in foul language. The f bomb and MF word were sparingly used in book one. Not the case in book two. They're running amok from the beginning to the end of the book. Dampened my enjoyment of this second book in the series.
Looking forward to more Nate Temple books.

Character development flat-lined, but story picks up enough in the back half to keep one reading past bedtime.

The initial two-thirds is not as good as the first book, but the last bit almost wipes away that deficit. I say almost, and stay at 4 starts because characters are seriously (almost offensively) cliche and flat through the bulk of the story. Yes, there are some fun plot twists and quite interesting hooks, but ultimately what keeps me interested in a series is caring about what happens to the characters.
