Apparently men don't wear cloths
By A. Brooks
Firstly, buy this book when its under $40. The prices on here for this book are atrocious. I ended up buying it used for $27. A great drop from the $60+(New and Used)its been for months. This is a great book but it would of been more helpful if it contained more mens fashion. I'm well aware that in manga/anime when it comes to variety with clothes its more about the women but this book acted as if male manga characters hardly wear clothes. Most of the characters I draw are male so for me this book was pretty much useless. On top of that I think the book is pretty repetitive. After 7 or 8 pages I'm pretty sure you'll know how to draw folds and wrinkles in a shirt. This book will be a wonderful reference if I need it when drawing female characters. In all its a nice add to the How To Draw series just wish it had more variety.

It's Okay
By Tag Jones
I initially gave this book only 1 star. At first glance I was really disappointed with it. However, since I have started to refer to it more I have found it more useful than I first thought. So I'm upping my rating to 3 stars. Some of the drawing are a bit small and I do think they look a bit too much like technical drawings (not much style to them). But overall I am finding it worthwhile to have.

Pubs were once a place where you could always guarantee good, simple, cheap food and a great Sunday roast, but when the steak houses and fast food chains arrived the good home cooking from the pub kitchens was replaced with tasteless, defrosted meals. Then came the gastropubs, which weren't much better, serving mediocre food at restaurant prices. That's why when Gordon Ramsay and Mark Sargeant set up the Gordon Ramsay pubs in London they wanted to produce the sort of simple but delicious British classics that warm the cockles of your heart and to serve them at affordable pub prices. Dishes like rich, hearty Chicken and Smoked Bacon Pie, mouth-watering Gloucestershire Sausages with Grainy Mustard Mash and Red Onion Marmalade and indulgent Treacle Tart - classics that have stood the test of time. Now Gordon has gathered his favourite British recipes into one sumptuous collection so you can invite your friends round, serve some good, English ale and cook the best in traditional pub food classics in your own home.

We use it all the time for weekend cooking
By Redsilas
I purchased this book in the UK, but would have loved to have the US measurements instead. My husband and I have made several nice dinners and lunches from this cookbook. Yeah, I can see where the pub food in this book may sound a bit 'posh', but the British pubs in my neighborhood in London are trying to serve this type of pub food. Some recipes you definitely wouldn't find in a local pub - that I will admit, but they are still delicious. Everything we've tried from this book has turned out fantastic, especially the honey lemon chicken recipe.

This book is a definite keeper for us and when we return to the States, will have this on hand to try and recreate the Sunday roasts and the other pub food presented in this book.

My recommendations for anyone trying out the recipes in this book are: read the instructions more than once, make sure you understand the steps, and have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go before you start.

Comfort food

I loved this book-since I am from England it was perfect for me. I could see where there may be some confusion for others over some of the ingredients but once you google them the U.S. comparison comes right up, same applies with the measurements. I would recommend it-great change to the usual dinner at home- Easy/quick cooking great results-suprise your friends!!!

From the Back Cover

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer reveals how we all can prevent ourselves from being victimised by others and begin to operate from a position of power at the centre of our own lives. Asserting that we alone are responsible for how much we will be controlled by others, Dyer offers his practical plan for developing new attitudes toward the most common sources of victimisation and manipulation, such as family members and authority figures in the workplace.

For example, families can be tremendously coercive and demanding, but they can also be an immensely rewarding part of your life. Dyer shows how to cope with the negative side and contribute to the positive.

Also, in their working life many people stay in unfulfilling jobs because they feel constrained by their present experience or because they fear change. Dyer shows that by being enthusiastic and flexible, you can find the work that makes you happy.

In this modern–day classic, Dyer shows you how to stop being the victim in all aspects of everyday life and to take charge of your destiny.

About the Author

Dr. Wayne W. Dyer was the bestselling author of 20 books and had a doctorate in counseling psychology. He lectured across the country to groups numbering in the thousands and appeared regularly on radio and television. He passed away in August of 2015.

Pulling Your Own Strings
By sara nelson
I read this book 22 years ago, when I was an 18 year old heading off to college. The book provided me with ways to be assertive and achieve my goals without allowing others to walk all over me.
Now, I am the mother of three teenagers and am reading this book again with my 14 year old daughter, in an effort to help her through a difficult time dealing with an authority figure (who is manipulative and abusing her power.)
I am simply amazed at how much of the information in the book has worked its way into my core beliefs over the years...from handling difficult people and situations to teaching my kids how to handle bullies. As we were reading the introduction, my daughter said, "Mom, I don't need to read this." When I asked her why, she commented "you've been teaching it to me all my life!"
Young adults, I highly recommend that each and every one of you read this book. Learn to stand up for yourself and be respected for doing so. Parents, you'll want to read it too!

Pulling Your Own Strings by Dr. Dyer
By Dr. Joseph S. Maresca
This work provides specific guidance on how to take control
of one's life ( to the extent that is possible). For instance,
he describes how to operate from a position of strength by
placing people on an equal plane and addressing them by their
first names. In addition, the author criticizes our tendency
to be governed by past events that we can no longer control
or change. He explains the need to draw boundaries and assert
ourselves in defense of our basic rights. The author
recommends the behavioral approach in order to respond to people
and events that make us uncomfortable. Above all, the author
warns about placing institutions over ourselves and personal
self-worth and satisfaction. Finally, the author asks us to
look around ourselves in an effort to make our daily lives
better for everyone. He even quotes the Declaration
of Independence (July 4, 1776):
"All experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to
suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed."
The book is an excellent behaviorally based reference which
can help us manage our affairs both privately and in the
workplace setting.

Read this book first, then Your Sacred Self
By Bob Feeser
Dr Dyer is a rare individual. He really understands. He has found simplicity. The truth is simple, that which I have yet to understand! I read this book first, and felt compelled to learn how to pull my own strings. I freed myself from outside influences by reading this book, Pulling Your Own Strings. We learn to be more than a sailboat, drifting on the sea with a fixed sail, frolicking about, at the mercy of every wave and breeze. I learned how to be effective at grabbing the control panel, that pull the strings of my life, which at times takes a bit of assertion. Combining that with one of his other books, "Your Sacred Self, I gained peace. I finally found the key to dealing with stress. I did so by learning what meditation really is from him. Instead of a lotus position, and humming a mantra, I learned that it is simply sitting or lying still, undisturbed, for ten or fifteen minutes, letting all thoughts leave my mind. Each thought is tied to an emotion. You come to a place that is quiet and peaceful, and your arise refreshed, renewed, and unfettered with stress and resentments. Then your greatest problem solving mind is present, solutions appear. It is true. What a great tool. Instead of resorting to addictive, and destructive habits, or substances to deal with stress, he has shown me the ultimate solution.
So there you have it, with Pulling Your Own Strings, you learn to be the master of your own life, and recognize those, and those things, that try to direct us, and not neccessarily for unselfish reasons. Then freed from outside control, we begin to see that the solutions to our lives are available to us from within. In Your Sacred Self, he teaches us that ego is controlling, and dominating our lives. It is at war with your greater spiritual self. It keeps us from sitting still. Always striving, but never arriving. Let the noise and clamor cease. We are all one together. We don't need ego driven domination, but rather cooperation. Get rid of the anger. Learn how to eliminate the negative influences in your life. The most powerful way for someone else to control you, is to make you angry. Once they see it no longer works, they usually leave you alone, or it makes them angrier that they no longer can control you. "It is like heaping coals of fire on their heads" Then acquire joy and peace. I know it sounds like cliches, but it is true, and I don't know how else to say it.
Dr Dyer gives you the tools, to build a new house. Or should I say, he reminds you of the house that has been there all along. Only the expressions are original, the thoughts lie within us all.

The natural world is filled with diverse—not to mention quirky and odd—animal behaviors. Consider the male praying mantis that continues to mate after being beheaded; the insects, insects, and birds that offer gifts of food in return for sex; the male hip-pocket frog that carries his own tadpoles; the baby spiders that dine on their mother; or the starfish that sheds an arm or two to escape a predator's grasp. In Ain’t Love Grand, Marty Crump—a tropical field biologist well known for her work with the reproductive behavior of amphibians—examines the bizarre conduct of animals as they mate, parent, feed, defend themselves, and communicate. More importantly, Crump points out that diverse and unrelated animals often share seemingly erratic behaviors—evidence, Crump argues, that these natural histories, though outwardly weird, are actually successful ways of living.

From Publishers Weekly
Sophisticated illustrations of the roaming "tyger" amid the "forests of the night" accompany Blake's famous poem. Shadowy black-and-gray spreads feature window-like insets of the dazzling color compositions for which Waldman ( Light ; America the Beautiful ) is noted, and each of these highlights one particular image--stars shooting across the skies; a woolly blue lamb; red-gold and velvet-black tiger stripes. The effect is a little like a lightning flash illuminating one small patch within a field of murky darkness. A naive stillness renders the creatures and their landscape symbolic, not quite real, vaguely mysterious. A full-color pull-out spread has special impact. Blake's poem is difficult in itself and, unfortunately, these stylized illustrations do little to bring his imagery within children's comprehension. Adults may be intrigued by Waldman's interpretation, but it does not work hand-in-hand with the text. All ages.
Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up-Both the darkness of the night and the brightness of the Tyger are addressed in this outstanding picture-book version of Blake's classic poem. Its antiquity is preserved in the calligraphic typeset, which resembles the poet's handwritten text for his illustrated works. Waldman's acrylic artwork, however, is modern, highly painterly, and formal. A full-color mural of the Tyger is revealed at the end, in a fold-out spread that spans four pages. Each double-page spread leading up to it is a section of the larger canvas done in black and shades of gray; a couplet appears on each verso, and is faced by a corresponding element of the painting on the recto, framed and in full color. Readers see the brilliantly colored beast-first in parts, such as paw or tail; then its face; then in totality. The lamb of the verse is also pictured in a full-color frame. The focus on individual portions of the whole gives readers an opportunity to study "The Tyger" carefully, and to discuss the artist's interpretation. Even the eye and hand of God are shown, pictured as mystical and disembodied metaphoric manifestations. An excellent choice for anyone studying the poem.
Ruth K. MacDonald, Quinnipiac College, Hamden, CT
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Ages 6 and up. "The Tyger," by revolutionary eighteenth-century poet William Blake, remains one of the most anthologized of all poems today. Even young readers are caught by the fiercely physical opening lines ("Tyger, Tyger, burning bright/ In the forests of the night") and by the pounding beat. You may not be at all certain what the poem means, but the sudden astonishing question--"Did he who made the Lamb make thee?"--confronts you with the elemental mystery of creation and of human nature. Waldman's acrylic paintings extend that sense of wonder. Within each double-page spread of dark swirling forest, he sets one stanza of the poem and one small frame of brilliant color. These frames are like a window or a lens; we see how the artist works to give shape to exploding energy. Some frames show a part of the tiger--the shoulder or the "dread feet" with their curving stripes. Some frames show a gentler pastoral scene or a wide view of sky and sea. At the end, a double-page spread of the whole tiger in black and white opens out to a four-page full-color panorama that includes all the parts we have seen. The huge, snarling tiger is at the center of a world that includes the lamb, the serpent, the curves of tree and flame, the eye of the artist, and the hand of God. As animal poem, as creation myth, and as introduction to the music of poetry, this book makes a stirring read-aloud. Hazel Rochman

From "The Horror Fiction Review"
By Christine
This new collection is packed with almost as much in the way of extra goodies as it is primary goodies, so that just makes for bonus win all the way around! An intro and bonus end stories by Jen and Sylvia Soska nicely bookend the volume.

Better yet, each story opens with a personal essay by the author to explain (or warn the reader) a bit about what they’re getting themselves into. I love this kind of thing, peeks inside the mindspace where some of my favorite people hang their creative hats. If nothing else, it helps make me feel better about my own muse’s living situation!

First up, obesity! The horror, the revulsion, the shame! In the eyes of many, fatness is The Worst Thing Ever; I remember a survey showing how many women would rather lose IQ points than gain pounds (admittedly, if I could just weigh my IQ, I’d be happy …).

“Fat Slob” hearkens back to King’s “Thinner,” but in a much more painful, gooshy, squicktastic way. And, like with “Thinner,” like with Wrath James White’s “Voracious,” as horrific as it is, the really evil and insidious part is, well, wouldn’t it still be kinda tempting?

“So Much Pain, So Much Death” I’d read before in the Fresh Fear anthology, and had almost successfully forgotten how disturbing it was … but here it is again, unsettling as ever! Maybe even more so on second read, because all those shivers just came rushing right on back.

Ouija board mishaps, the perils of distracted driving, Halloween hijinks, sport/trophy hunting, Ed Gein having a garage sale, dead kittens as just the tip of the hoarder iceberg, a troubled man’s unique deadly addiction, clowns, and all manner of weirdness make their way into the mix.

And then, it’s time for the grand finale, with the “Stab the Rabbit.” Damn near everybody I’ve ever known would agree with the first half of the intro; Jessica Rabbit defined sex-on-a-plate for an entire generation. But then it gets twisted. Deliciously, deviantly twisted. Cartoon universes are awesome, with their own rules and laws of physics that may or may not apply in our own … seeing them meet, in particularly unthinkable ways, is a sick, fun-filled ride.

The same can basically be said for the whole book. Does not disappoint, especially if you’re expecting gruesome hilarity with underlying depth, pathos and insight.

Shane writes about things that most will not fear to go due to political correctness in this day and age.
By Kindle Customer
Wet and Screaming by Shane McKenzie was received direct from the publisher in exchange for this review. Well, what can you say about Shane McKenzie and his writing? Shane writes about things that most will not fear to go due to political correctness in this day and age. What made this collection of short stories stand out was the prologue to each story, which gave some insight to the thought process of the writing of the story, or not. None of the stories were too long, thus I never got dragged down by inane dialogue and none were too short that left me feeling cheated. If you like outrageous storytelling and have a strong stomach, or you know someone who does, certainly buy this book.

Shane McKenzie knocks it out of the ballpark with this horror colleciton
By Amazon Customer
This is hands down one of my all-time favorite collections of horror short stories. "You Don't Need Eyes to See Us" is quite possibly my favorite horror short of all time; it starts at the part in most horror films enter their climax and drags you into a pit of terror and buries you alive. That story reminded me, in all of the best ways, of the 1980's classic "The Gate" in its unrelenting horror unleashed on a few hapless kids.

Additional stories that jumped off the page and wrapped themselves around my brain like barbed wire include "Ed Gein's Garage Sale," "He's Just a Baby," and "Give Me Something Good to Eat," but really, there isn't a bad one in the bunch.

So, long story short, if you read one horror collection this year, "Wet and Screaming" is the one to choose.

Amazon.com Review
Anyone who designs anything to be used by humans--from physical objects to computer programs to conceptual tools--must read this book, and it is an equally tremendous read for anyone who has to use anything created by another human. It could forever change how you experience and interact with your physical surroundings, open your eyes to the perversity of bad design and the desirability of good design, and raise your expectations about how things should be designed.

Excellent, a seminal work of design psychology
By Michael F. Maddox
Although this book is a product of the 1980's, its essential premise is not dated nor obsolete. Dr. Norman vividly illustrates the good and bad of design, and provides an excellent guidebook for the understanding of basic user-centric design in products, fixtures, software, and the everyday things that make up our world.
I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the design and creation of software, architecture, or consumer products. You will find some dated, quaint information within its pages, such as the descriptions of the "computer notepad" and hypertext (both of which came to fruition with Palm Computers and the Web), but, as a whole, the book is a collection of relevant, interesting material. It is an excellent starting point for the study of design.
For those interested in additional study on software and user interface design (programmers, such as I), I recommend Alan Cooper's books on user interface design, and ANY of Jakob Nielsen's books. In addition, the Edward Tufte trilogy on visual representations is extremely good, although not software-specific.

Design for everyday Human Behavior
By Jeffrey Sauro
This is one of the seminal works in the field of User Centered Design. Norman wrote this book well before the Windows operating system was as familiar as the Golden Arches--which only reinforces the idea that certain basic usability principles transcend all forms of objects--from glass doors to Windows Explorer.
Norman does a great job of describing why and how we successfully and unsuccessfully use everyday objects with relevant anecdotes. His stories are usually accompanied with lists of principles that explain good design and account for human behavior. For example, the fundamental principals of designing for people are to: Provide a good conceptual model, make controls visible and to constantly provide feedback to the user.
So how does one employ good user-centered design? Norman recapitulates his points at the end of the book by listing the seven UCD principles for transforming difficult tasks into easy ones:
1. Use both knowledge in the world and in the head
2. Simplify the structure of tasks
3. Make things visible
4. Get the mappings right
5. Exploit the powers of constraints-Natural & Artificial
6. Design for Error
7. When all else fails, standardize
It's mandatory reading for any usability software engineer but also an interesting and well written book for anyone who's ever pushed a "pull door" or scalded themselves in the shower (which is all of us).

The difference between designers and users
By frumiousb
Let me start by acknowledging that the book is not perfect. The end notes are annoying and Norman can have a tendancy to ramble and I guess that not everyone would find that charming. However, I assert that the strengths of the book more than make up for its weaknesses-- it is an important book, and one that anyone engaged in designing things for other people should read.
The central point is simple-- the needs of the user are different from the needs of the designer. The designer might want everyone's actions with his system to be precise, the user might need to have a "good enough" range of precision approximation. The designer wants to make the knobs the same so they look good together, the user wants to be able to tell quickly which knob applies to which function. It's a basic concept that can't (particularly on the Internet today) be repeated often enough.
Norman looks at the kinds of errors people make in usage and discusses how designers can plan to prevent these kind of errors. He discusses some of the basic things that users find valuable and walks the reader through some classic (and often funny, because so recognizable) design errors.
The writing is clean and (with the exception of the aforementioned rambling) very clear. Norman's voice is full of humor and a real passion for the subject, and that voice is conveyed very well by the book.

Loved! Loved! Loved!
By Sheila M
"When had the Ghost of St. Giles become a woman?"

FINAL DECISION: Loved! Loved! Loved! Immediately one of my favorite books I've read this year. Alf is an amazing character -- cynical and world wise and yet hopeful, gentle and innocent in a way that touches and changes the heart of a man who doesn't want to hope. Alf's also a kickass hero in her own right and Hugh is a man who can appreciate her.

THE STORY: Hugh Fitzroy, Duke of Kyle is the bastard son of the King. Returning to England after years abroad, Hugh is trying to rebuild his relationship with his sons after his wife's death. He has spent much of his adult life doing "tasks" for the English Crown. His latest is to destroy the Lords of Chaos -- a group of depraved aristocrats who prey on women and children. When Hugh is attacked in the dangerous St. Giles area of London it looks like his luck has run out until he is rescued by the Ghost of St. Giles. Hugh is thankful for the help but is amazed when he discovers that the Ghost is a woman.

Alf is 21 year old woman who has protected herself in St. Giles by living her life as a boy. During the day, she is the street rat informant who makes her living getting information. At night, she becomes the Ghost of St. Giles to protect the innocent. When she rescues Hugh, she can't resist stealing a kiss.

OPINION: I absolutely loved this book. I consumed this book in one quick gulp -- reading late into the night. But even more, I didn't want to leave it behind. I normally read a book a day...but this book lingered for me. I felt compelled to revisit parts and I essentially almost re-read it in its entirety. Beautiful, exciting, adventurous, deep and meaningful and just plain fun. This one has moved onto my favorite of 2016 list for sure.

A book about longing for connection, for being known as ones true self, for belonging, for hope and dreams, this is a book that grabbed me from the first to the last page. Sometimes a book soars because of the characters (and this one does) and sometimes it soars because it has something significant to say about the human condition (and this one does) and sometimes it is just a good exciting adventure (and this one is).

"At night she was the Ghost of St. Giles. She protected the people of St. Giles -- her people, living in the big, dark woods. She ran out the monsters -- the murderers, rapists and robbers. And she flew over the roofs of the city by moonlight, free and wild. During the day she was Alf, a boy. She made her living dealing in information. She listened and learned, and if you wanted to know who was running pickpocket boys and girls in Covent Gardens or which doxies had the clap or even what magistrate could be bought and for how much, she could tell you and would -- for a price."

Alf has been a longtime presence in this series. She is an informant, a information rat. If you want to know something, Alf is your "man". Having worked for many of the characters in the series, she has loyalty to those who pay her, but looks out for herself.

As this book begins, Alf has also become the Ghost of St. Giles. As has been true with each "Ghost" in the series, Alf has her own reasons for taking on the role. Forced to hide herself in her role as Alf for most of her life, Alf finds a freedom in being the Ghost. It allows her to be a different self than she appears as Alf. Reckless, daring, free. It is entirely fitting that Alf first kisses Hugh as the Ghost because while her face is masked as the Ghost, her femininity is not. As Alf, she binds her breasts and acts as masculine as possible. It is as the Ghost, that her breasts are unbound and she is free to act on her attraction to Hugh.

What Alf is not free to be is a woman. The world is a dangerous place for a woman.

Remarkably, while Alf is worldly and cynical (having grown up on the streets), she has been able to retain a sense of innocence, dreams, and hope. It is those qualities which most appeal to Hugh.

"He wanted her worldly cynicism and her innocent wonder."

Hugh is a man who has learned to not want too much. He has learned that wanting can only lead to disappointment. For Hugh, every promise of happiness had actually been problematic. He is a king's son who grew up without a father. He found love and married the woman he wanted, only to end up estranged from her and his children.

His attraction to Alf is something Hugh inherently distrusts.

"He didn't want to know her. Didn't want to care about her, didn't want to worry about her, didn't want to long for her."

Yet, Hugh is helpless before the reality of Alf. She is more than he ever could have imagined. Hugh is a generous caring hero and he is captivated by those same qualities in Alf along with her wildness, her intelligence and her ability to see beauty and hope in the world.

"He and she were more alike than she ever would've guessed, that first time she'd seen him"

Hugh and Alf seem to be opposites as the book begins and yet they have an essential sameness which attracts them to one another. There is a real sense of camaraderie between them as they work together to take down the Lords of Chaos. There is a swashbuckling feel to this book that had me completely enthralled.

This book has a tremendous amount of energy because of their adventures. There is a sense of wildness and freedom and a real pull of these two together as they fight and scheme and puzzle their way through the mystery of the book. Hugh truly respects Alf's abilities. She is a skilled swordswoman and a clever thief. She is strong and fearless and sometimes reckless. While Hugh wants to protect her, he doesn't try because he knows she had incredible skills. I loved that about Hugh. He demonstrates true respect for her as a person throughout this book.

While I loved all those aspects to this book, what kept me thinking about this book all day was how Hugh and Alf are revealed and exposed to one another. Hugh is a man who appears on the surface the perfect cold duke and yet Alf discovers that he is an incredibly loving father, a man who gives money to his commoner relatives but eschews requests from the aristocratic ones. Hugh discovers Alf's secrets and asks the one thing she wants and fears -- for her to publicly become a woman. Hugh wants and needs all of Alf -- boy urchin, Ghost and woman.

I loved Alf, loved Hugh and loved the excitement and adventure of the story of this book. Hoyt has a beautiful and lyrical quality to her writing which tugs on my heart and makes me warm and happy.

I loved, loved, loved this book!

WORTH MENTIONING: This book also sets up the next book which is advertised as being the final in the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: DUKE OF PLEASURE is the eleventh book in the Maiden Lane series. Normally, I recommend reading these books in context, but I think a new reader could read this book as a standalone.

STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars!

Maiden Lane Book 11 - 4.5 Stars
By Angie Mike
Duke of Pleasure is another great addition to the 'Maiden Lane' series which was full of passion, adventure, and intrigue. I absolutely adore this series, and Ms. Hoyt is the only author who is an auto-buy for me. She literally can't put out her books fast enough as far as I'm concerned. If you haven't read this series then you should definitely start from the beginning with 'Wicked Intentions' and enjoy the journey ahead of you. Those like me who are addicted to it however, know that Alf (the heroine) has been a side character for a long time now, and Hugh, The Duke of Kyle (and hero) was introduced in the last book. Abandoned at the age of five, Alf has survived the streets by posing as a boy. She deals in information by day and defends the downtrodden as the Ghost of St. Giles at night. Hugh is newly widowed and on the hunt for the Lords of Chaos, a secret society of aristocrats who prey on the most innocent. When an ambush brings these two together they'll put their bold and clever minds together to stop this evil group and unexpectedly find their soul mate in the process...

This story pulled me in from the very first sentence and was fast paced, well written and most importantly, never boring. Alf has got to be one of the best heroine's ever written by anyone, and I just fell in love with her sweet yet cynical and jaded but still innocent soul. She was such a contradiction and just a brave and beautiful person both inside and out. The story is often dark and gritty, with language and sex scenes some may find offensive, but it works for this series which centers around the rough and dangerous streets of St. Giles. While I loved Hugh, I do wish it hadn't taken him so long to realize Alf wasn't a boy and not waited until the end to come to terms with the fact that he couldn't live without her. The relationship between Alf and Hugh's two sons was truly lovely too and I was overjoyed to see St. John and Megs (book 5) again. Although an unlikely pair, Alf and Hugh complemented and completed each other. All in all, it was an absolute pleasure to read and I'm already looking forward to Iris and Dyemore's book next. I highly recommend this entire series and author!

Much more enjoyable to me than her other recent books
By Jen M
I've read all the other books in this series, but honestly was kind of over these books. I found the last few somewhat disappointing, so while I still pre-ordered this one, it sat on my kindle for 6 weeks before I decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did! I enjoyed this book so much more than the other recent editions in this series. I wasn't that inclined to like the heroine (an orphaned girl who dresses as a boy to serve on the streets), but her quiet yearning to be known as a women and to have a family to love was so sweetly poignant. And I ended up rooting wholeheartedly for this clever, brave girl finally allowed to come into her womanhood. For others like me that might have been ready to give up on Ms. Hoyt, I suggest giving this book a chance.
