wonderful and inspiring read

In an elegant style, The Yearning Soul unearths the revealed knowledge of our divine destinies and identities by exploring the core truths of the restored gospel. It is a wonderful and inspiring read. That is the praise I gave the book as I had the privilege of reading the much lengthier manuscript before publication. It's wonderfully written and probes on why or why not believe in God, deals with philosophical questions we all ask ourselves, whether or not we admit it or not. Highly recommend to anyone who ponders the deeper things of life and enjoys material the leads to pondering deeply. Highly Recommend!!

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book. The author does a wonderful job explaining God's love for each of his children. The book reminds us that it is ok to ask questions about gospel principles and that God has given us numerous tools and placed people in our paths so we can receive proper answers to our questions.

This book starts out in a conversational tone as if the author is directing his words to someone who is struggling with a testimony. I found myself picturing the author as a bishop sitting across the desk from someone who is honestly seeking to know why the gospel can be hard to understand and follow at times.
In some ways, The Yearning Soul, by David Olsen, is a lot like reading the Sunday School Gospel Principles manual, but in a more personal and expounded way. It follows many of the same lessons you would find in the Gospel Principles manual, but treats them in a way that makes it feel more … um, how do I say this? … it’s okay to not absorb every detail of the gospel and pretend it’s always hunky-dory and easy. Sometimes living the gospel is hard, but that doesn’t mean it’s not right or not worth it.
I found myself saying at times, “Okay, that’s pretty basic information.” And other times I found myself going back over passages I had already read and putting the book down just to think about the depth of what I just read. My favorite passage from the book is:
You ask, “How is this true? If He is all powerful, why hasn’t He reached out to me in more profound ways so I know with certainty that He exists?”
The Answer is your sincere, honest, and open search for Heavenly Father and your questions about your existence are essential in this world where we must walk by faith. This journey is important for realizing your identity as a daughter or son of God. You must know more than just God exists. He desires most to have a relationship with you and for you to experience Him through revelation and reason.
While there are a lot of really profound things in this book that really caused me to think deeply, the main audience for this book are those who want a better understanding of the basics. Even the deep stuff doesn’t go into the “deep doctrine.” There was nothing in this book I would say is too heavy for the twelve year olds I teach in Sunday School (That’s my calling right now. Best calling in the church!). If you are at all wondering about the basics- Does God exist? How can I get an answer to prayer? Why do I not always get an answer when I pray? What does personal revelation feel like and why is it important? What is the reason for my earth life? Etc. If these types of questions are what is on your mind, then this book is perfect for you, whether you’re 12 or 92, whether you’re new to the church or have been all your life.

Eye opening!

I bought this book on a whim. Another homeschooling mom had told me about the blog We are THAT family. I liked what I saw and the author released this book 2 days later. To be honest, like others probably, I bought this thinking I was going to find out how to fix my kids. My husband and I are in a battle against entitlement with our kids daily it seems. Instead what I am getting out of this book is so much more! I am not figuring how to fix my kids, but how to fix myself! I find myself constantly reading it out loud with my husband and discussing many of the issues presented in this book. It has really made us stop and think about ourselves and how we parent. It is revolutionizing our lives! We have already started making small changes in our home. I highly recommend to anyone with kids of any age or if you are preparing to start a family.

Timely book - no matter how old your child.

I have a teenager and I was afraid this book would not be relevant to me. I was afraid it was too late to glean new parenting tips. Boy, was I wrong. I wish this book had been written years ago. I enjoyed it so much! Kristen Welch was able to not only affirm that I am doing something right in this world that says I am crazy for going against the "norm", but this book challenged me to not give up even at this stage. It is not to late to (continue) to teach gratefulness to my daughter. I also found myself checking my own level of gratitude vs. entitlement. And that is not a bad thing to do.... even in your mid 40's. I have already decided that I am going to pass this book along to a brand new Mommy that I know so she can be challenged and encouraged too!

A wonderful book, must read for parents who are struggling with ungrateful children, or soon-to-be parents whose desire is to start parenting right. Kristen makes suggestions about boundaries to make and how to discipline without saying her way is the only right way. Coming from a biblical world view, Kristen is able to put absolute truth into everyday life and show the reader how destructive our society has become.

I read this book in one afternoon and i could not break away. For me, like many, I am constantly struggling with inner demons and second guessing myself and my decisions. The characters in this book can be any one of us and the way that the author so accurately portrays these feelings and struggles spoke to me. I felt as though i could relate so closely to the characters, their insecurities and their fear. I have heard the quote before "the only thing stopping you is you", and its easier said than done, but very true.
