The Man who couldn't be killed is an unforgettable story of faith and miraculous deliverance in Communist China at the height of the Cultural Revolution. Glorious Country Wong, the heroe in this story, spent twenty years in a hard-labor camp in the high desert of eastern China. His crime? He was a Christian, and a Seventh-day Adventist who loved to tell of his Lord Of the five thousand prisoners sent with Mr Wong to this camp in 1948, only 18 survived the twenty year term, and only one was released to his family agian--The man who couldn't be killed.
Mr. Wong's unflinching courage to tell others of his "best friend, Jesus," and of His "Ten Regulations," led his persecutors to repeatedly beat Mr. Wong, once for 17 days!!
Once he was tied to a pole, with his arms cinched behind his back in sixty-degree below zero weather for an entire night, and survived!! An angel untied the knot. But even more astonishing, when the guard returned the next moring, Mr. Wong would be accused of having someone in the camp help him escape, so he placed his hands behind the pole, praying for a solution. Instantly he felt the ropes tightening around his hands. When the returning guard was greeted with a cheery, "Good Morning," he gasped and turned white. "This can't be," the guard could only stammer, "You're supposed to be frozen to death!"

Mr. Wong, the Man of Faith

As a non-English native speaker, I hardly ever touched by the books written in English. This book named ��The Man Who Couldn��t Be Killed�� is an exception. I have to confess that sometimes I wept while I was reading. This is a book about the persecution in China during the Cultural Revolution. This book shows us how God changes a normal man of the world to the bravest fighter of God. Mr. Wong, who was rich and had a good job, gave up what he had and endured all the persecutions for his real Friend, Jesus. He divorced his second wife as Bible commanded, his salary was cut down because he kept the Sabbath, and finally he lost his job because he was a real Christian. Moreover, he was sent to wild land leaving his family at hometown. His family also got hard time to survive without enough money or food. His wife and his first son died by tuberculosis. They were not under medical treatment because they could not afford for the hospital cost. Mr. Wong spent 20 years at the tough working field but never lost his faith in spite of unreasonable imprisonment and persecutions. This book is easy to follow and understand. Stanley Maxwell, the author has deep understanding about Chinese culture and successfully introduces what happened in China during the Cultural Revolution to non-Chinese readers. He collected writing data from five main sources and he also interviewed Mr. Wong face to face for this book. His teaching experience at university in China might help him understand Chinese culture. His wife, who is Chinese, helped him to feel what Chinese felt. These efforts and experience makes this book vivid. For example, this book used the word ��ten regulations�� instead of ��the Ten Commandments��. That was exactly what Chinese felt about ��the Ten Commandments.�� After I read this book, I introduced this book to my family in Korea. They can read it in Korean because it is translated in four languages including Korean.

Inspirational Story With Relevance For Today

The Man Who Couldn't Be Killed, by Stanley Maxwell, is a well written narrative focusing on the issues of religious persecution and personal perseverance. Maxwell's objective for The Man Who Couldn't Be Killed was to share the story of a man, Glorious Country Wong, caught in the unjust hands of persecution and to share his faith with all who read his book. Maxwell accomplished all of this by various means and methods. He had at least five main sources for this work, personal accounts, and traveled to all the places in Mr. Wong's story to really get the feel of the story. Maxwell's point was to not only tell the amazing story of Mr. Wong, but to show the story with all the emotion and drama as when the events were actually playing out in Mr. Wong's life. Other than Maxwell's main sources, he had translators who were very accurate in their translations. For instance, the "Ten Regulations" are assumed to be the Ten Commandments but the direct translation from Chinese to English came out as the "Ten Regulations", which is why it was used instead of Ten Commandments.
I think this book is an extremely worthwhile book to read. Aside from the religious aspect of the book, the historical and political views of this book give us, as Westerners, a more realistic picture of our world today. On the more religious side of the book, The Man Who Couldn't Be Killed is an amazing portrayal of what God can do for those who believe in Him and obey Him. It seems like Westerners these days are looking towards other things to fill their spiritual quota need when really all we need to do is look towards God and He will take care of all our problems. Some might argue that Maxwell limited himself when he focused the book on Mr. Wong believing as a Seventh-day Adventist but I tend to disagree. I feel as though it is good to identify Mr. Wong's faith with the religion that his faith was linked with. Mr. Wong's problems really started when he made a decision to keep the Sabbath instead of working and I feel that it's important to be accurate and show that truth. All in all, it was a good, educational, and a spiritually uplifting book.

Love this Storyline and Characters

I have really enjoyed these Dark Mirror stories. It's not the typical supernatural story line of werewolves or vampires but it runs the gamut of Demons from Hell (which really aren't as bad as one might think), Faes, Weres, Vampires and even more supernatural beings that I've never even heard of. That might sound like it's too much packed into one story but it's not - the author does a great job of blending all these characters in a good harmony. And at the center of the story is the main character Cate Delacy who has wonderful wit, strength, powers of her own, and a personal favorite of mine - Southern charm. I'll definitely be watching for the 3rd book which I hope comes very, very soon!

Marie Castle did it Again!!!!

I have loved so much the first book of this new and intriguing paranormal series that I was a little bit worried about it's sequel, because lets be honest here, in those kind of circumstances everyone tend to think that the next book is doomed to fell short after the first big Boom...well I now can take a sigh of relief because the story keep being as amazing as it's started.

It's always a good sign when I become so engrossed in a story that do anything else than keep reading it make me unbearable (well good for the book not so much for the people around me), and this is the 2nd book of Marie Castle that push me to read the story in one sitting and postpone everything else during my second journey in DM Universe.

There are so many things that I have loved about this read that I am quite appalled that no one else have yet wrote a review about this book...but well here I am so let's start with the plot:

The story start exactly where the 1st one ended, we have a very interesting prologue that keep give us precious information about Evie and the how Cate come to be, after that the story told by her protagonist start again.
The Devil You Know offer a lot of explanation for things that where leaving hanging in the first book but the author is a sneaky woman so a lot of things come up/out in this book that keep me as a reader wondering what come next.
In this book new really interesting characters are introduced and also if the scheme of things have Mrs Castle signature all over it, the author is good enough to not fall in the trap of repetitiveness. Every character is easily recognizable and is well developed also when they don't have (yet?) a big or important role in the storyline. No one nor two dimensional characterization here, just like I like it...and this is true also for the bad guys and this make the story so much more appealing for me.

The romantic interaction between Jacq and Cate is hotter than ever, and any reader can start to connect the dots about what come next and where the story is going if s/he feels like doing so, surely the author give us enough informations to formulate hypothesis.

I really don't want to talk to much about the plot because I don't want to spoiler the read but there are 3 facts that have make me really happy:

1- also if the author take the time and space in the book to introduce other characters point of views the 90% of the story is all about Cate. For me that was a win-win situation I was able to enjoy the introduction of the new characters or drink in new information of previous ones without feel any need to skip some pages over the always unpleasant sensation that that parts about other people were an unwelcome fill in. The storyline about Cate don't become too diluted and thin to make me lose the focus and mixing it with other little storylines is done so well that all is well balanced.

2- The storyline make sense, okay maybe I am too easily overwhelmed by this fact but after have read a lot of series where there is a disjointed feeling about where the story is going I am always unbelievable happy when I found a sequel that feel like a sequel, and a story that progress in a sensible way.

3- also if I have a love-hate relationships with sneak peaks (that because I always want more), I love that in her books the author left us a previews of the next chapter of the story...I find it also comforting because seeing it make me know that she is already writing the new book and make me hope that the wait for the next adventure does not exceed the 1 year of waiting.

Other really cool facts for me are the little introductions that every chapter have, they are so funny and the right ones give us additional informations, and the extras about Characters and Glossary, now that the number of players have increased so much I like this simple way to remind who is who and a glossary is always good when you explore a new world with it's different rules.

Great read, amazing sequel and masterfully written.

Another winner in the Darkmirror Series

The Devil You Know is book two in the Dark Mirror Agency series. Castle brings back Cate Delacy, her grandmother and aunt, and some of the other characters from book one. Cate has a new assignment, which is to find the body of Gemini Roskov's father. She also has a meeting with her paternal grandmother, who is Queen of Denoir, and looking for a female heir to the throne. She thinks Cate is a good candidate. Hoff (The Captive Voice, Tyndale, 1996) combines fast-moving action with some believable characters to make this an enjoyable addition to the "Daybreak Mysteries" series. A sound purchase for most libraries.

Although listed as third in the Daybreak series, this story can stand alone. Two families are fixing up a camp in West Virginia when Teddy Giordano, who is fleeing the Mob, chooses one of the deserted cabins as a hiding place. The resulting conflict will bring assassins to the camp and put everyone to the test. Jean DeBarbieris reads with a very empathetic style--often too much so, with a bit too much sweetness coloring most of the story. Her vocal characterizations of New Yorkers, mobsters, a retarded child and Southerners are overdone, bordering on caricature. As with the other Daybreak Mysteries, B. J. Hoff does a great job of putting Daniel and Jennifer right back into the action and suspense that seems to follow them wherever they go. In The Tangled Web, they meet a mob informant as well as a mentally handicapped boy who will eventually become their son. The way that Daniel deals with his own handicap of blindness is an inspiration in this series as well as the way that the characters lean on the power of God to see them through dangerous and even life-threatening situations. The Tangled Web, like all of the Daybreak mysteries, kept me reading until the end and I thank B. J. for her great writing style!
