Dr. Simmons takes us into the world of the New Testament in an exciting and insightful way. Scholarly, yes. Boring and dry, no. Offers meat on a stick with dessert on the side! The illustrations, photography, time lines, and maps are excellent. The organization of the book and readability is also fantastic. Great quality at a very affordable price. Should be a part of any manners and customs library. A must for all pastors, preachers, and Biblical teachers.

4.5 stars as an undergraduate textbook for EE students

This book is one of the best undergradute textbooks for EE students, especially students having focus on physical-layer communication engineering. The highlight of this book is the enormous amount of well-written problems at the end of each chapter. These problems really help students fully understand abstract definitions and theorems which otherwise will not be easily cracked.
This book, however, has the following drawbacks:
1. The author should have emphasized in the first chapter the importance of real analysis and measure theory in order to motivate the students planning graduate research to study and prepare for the math courses during their undergraduate study.
2. No section for complex Gaussian random variable and vector, which are very important in digital communications.
3. No limit theorems except CLT.
4. No handling of convergence of a random sequence.
Even with above drawbacks, this book is still the classic. I recommend ambitious students to read a little bit advanced books along with this book to better understand the subject.

Horrible book

The book offers no rigor in any sense and the author seems to have simply copied a large number of formulas from a real probability book. Explanations are sparse and incoherent with vague references to "important applications" with no sense of the abstract concept and virtually no insight into any of the information presented; as another reviewer wrote it is quite dry, I can't see Ben Stein narrating it, but I can picture the author sitting at his keyboard haphazardly plunking in text from other 'sources' all the while wondering what it means.

Skip this and get something with more substance, Peebles offers nothing more than you could find on wikipedia, perhaps less.

A bad book to start with..

This book though looks simple and pretends to present concepts in a lucid manner, does not match international standards. Very few examples are present with less/no illustrations. I struggled with this book for almost 2 years to understand the concepts as this book was the only popular book in my UG college and was readily available in our library. It has ideally no practical examples which can easily discourage reader. After reading contemporary books from Prof Roy Yates and Prof Leon-Garcia, I could do little favor for this book by giving 1 star.

However, one who is already thorough with concepts can use this book for revision. There is a huge element of risk involved in starting with this book to learn probability concepts.

Holland loses old friends, encounters vicious discrimination, and is thrown out of the house by her hysterical mother. She finds help at the local Gay Resource Center, however, and begins to look forward to attending a local college after high school, with Cece by her side. Peters knows how to tell an intriguing story. However, while both teens are likable, believable characters, the confidence with which Cece proudly proclaims her sexual orientation at school strains credibility. This aside, the antigay slurs, viciousness, and prejudice the girls endure certainly leave an indelible impression. Peters's message may be heavy-handed at times, but, overall, this is a well-written and thought-provoking novel.

Gr. 9-12. In these novels about first love, a high-school girl falls hard for another girl and faces the complicated pain of coming out to family, friends, and to one's self. In Gravel Queen, the author's debut novel, Aurin explores her first gay relationship, and finds that her best friend, a glamorous, possessive drama queen, is jealous. Benduhn focus on Aurin's self-discovery and friendships, closing the novel before Aurin tells her family what's going on. In Keeping You a Secret, model high-school senior Holland, who has a boyfriend, develops an overwhelming crush on Cece. The girls fall passionately in love and a tragic coming-out story ensues. Holland finds herself homeless and alone, except for Cece and a new gay support system.

Both novels, written in first-person, are filled with believable inner monologues and finely tuned contemporary dialogue. Benduhn includes some interesting cinematic references related to Aurin's filmmaking aspirations, but some of her descriptions are over-the-top. Peters' story and characters are more developed. Both books are romantic and layered, and many teens, particularly those with fluid sexual identities, will recognize the questions: Do you have to kiss someone to be gay? What do fantasies mean? This is an absolutely amazing book about teens, sexuality, and society. Peters does a wonderful job in capturing the issues surrounding coming out for young people, and deals with them courageously and realistically. She delivers a story of one girl who is supported by her parents and another who is disowned. These girls find comfort in each other as they deal with internal and external forces. If a book like this had been available 20 years ago, I might have made different choices in my own life. I might even have my own pre-teen daughters read it.

The book is well-written, thoughtful, and easy to read. I haven't read a story this good in a very long time.

Recommended for anyone of any age who is dealing with issues of sexuality... accompanied with a Coke and a bowl of Bing cherries...

Bullies be gone!

I really enjoyed this book & I flew through it. Keeping You A Secret was really eye opening with the LGBTQ community and the struggles they go through. I think people need to accept them more and welcome them with open arms. They're the same as straight people. They love just like we do. Who cares if it's of the same gender? That's bulls*** that they get bullied for it. The discrimination needs to stop.
I'd recommend this book to anyone. Especially the bullies. Maybe it'll open your eyes up to how others really feel & to stop being a jerk.

Running nerds will adore this book, but I found it boring and unoriginal

This isn't a bad book by any of means, and running nerds will adore it, but I was bored. Despite my vast background as an elite athlete - with many of years competing at the national and international level on both road and trail, I was one to never speak much of my sport, to take an interest in cliquey running groups, or to keep abreast of various happenings in the sport through trendy publications such as Runners World and the like. Therefore, this book didn't speak to me. Rather, it was just another autobiography of several accomplished, but rather unoriginal distance runners.

Thoroughly enjoyable tome for running fans!

I'm a recreational marathoner (7 and counting) but take my running very seriously, regardless. I bought a used, marked up copy of this on amazon and was happily surprised at how much enjoyment and useful information I have gotten from it.

So many profiles of great runners...all presented (no surprise, since it's from RUNNERS WORLD magazine) in abbreviated, interesting biographies that highlight their personal and professional accomplishments on and off the race track. Lots of pearls of wisdom, sage advice and things to think about for runners of all levels, regardless of skill or dedication.

There's something for every runner in this thick, wonderful book which I find myself picking up again and again...especially the night before a race or long run!

Depends on what you are looking for...

I would agree with the other reviewers that this is by no means a training manual (ala Daniels or Coe). However, that doesn't change the fact that it is a very enjoyable book to read, covering legends of the past as well as more recent champions. If you are interested in marathoning, this book is particularly good, as most of the runners covered are marathoners.
Whilst the training plans will be of little use, I find this book a great motivator, and that's what every runner needs!

a good standard for the beginning conductor

I bought this book to compare it to other "how to" conducting sources such as "What to Listen for In Music" by Aaron Copland and Anthony Maiello's "Conducting: A Hands-On Approach". Though compact and in simplistic language, I would recommend this as a quick read for any beginning choral conductor because Imogen Holst takes the basic of directing music and applies it specifically to the woes/problems of the choral world.

Helpful book with lots of tips

This book will function very well as a kind of 'extended' introduction to choral conduction.
Although it is short on (drawings of) different beat patterns and other technical stuff it presents a lot of other subjects to consider and that can be applied in practice: how to set up a rehearsel, how to organize a concert, joining festivals and so on.
For the real technical stuff you need to consult more detailed books. But 'Conducting a choir' gives an excellent overview of subjects the (starting) conductor have to master.

About the Author
Theodor W. Adorno was one of the founders of the Frankfurt School of Critical Theory. Among his many books are Problems of Moral Philosophy (Stanford, 2000), Introduction to Sociology (Stanford, 2000), Sound Figures (Stanford, 1999), and Beethoven: The Philosophy of Music (Stanford, 1998).
