About the Author
Dr. Brian Matsumoto is a retired research scientist who has worked for 30 years documenting experiments with technologically advanced cameras. He now spends his time photographing with a variety of cameras and lenses, and is interested in expanding a camera’s potential by pairing it with specialized optics such as microscopes and telescopes. He enjoys spending time outdoors and carries his camera on all of his hikes to photograph nature. In addition to the nine books he has written for Rocky Nook, Dr. Matsumoto has published several articles and has had his photographs published in a number of periodicals. His photographs have also appeared on the covers of American Laboratory, BioTechniques, and BioPhotonics. He is experienced in the technical aspects of photography and is an adjunct instructor for the Hooke College of Applied Sciences. Dr. Matsumoto recently served as a judge for the Olympus BioScapes International Digital Imaging Competition.

Carol F. Roullard has been an avid photographer since her high school years when she first experimented with black-and-white artistic composition. Since then, she has continued photographing mainly nature and architecture. Ms. Roullard has used a variety of cameras covering a wide range of makes and models, from simple point-and-shoot to complex professional-level cameras. In addition to co-authoring eight books for Rocky Nook, Ms. Roullard produces award-winning fine art photography and utilizes her previous art business experience to manage her online gallery and present her work at art shows. Recently, Ms. Roullard has begun giving speeches for writers and photography associations. Another great guide for the A7II....

Obviously, I have enjoyed all four of Brian Smith's excellent books and blog postings.. But if you have already have both of Brian Smith's Sony books, you should also consider buying this new guide by Brian Matsumoto and Carol Roullard. It's 356 pages of technical details, illustrations, tips and advice that will help most experienced Canon/Nikon shooters make best use of the A7II.

Rocky nook's "The Sony A7ii: The Unofficial Quintessential Guide" was worth waiting for and money sell spent.

Long time coming...and worth the wait. While I had read reviews of other books written by Mr. Matsumoto, this is the first of his books that I have purchased and read. As the owner of a Sony A7ii, and a serious amateur photographer, I was well versed in the camera's use.....but this book has allowed me to go to a new level. The book includes the technical information that one would expect, but along with personal observations, recommendations, and useful examples, the writing is clean, crisp, and understandable (for the experienced and inexperienced photographer). The only downside of the book is that it has already cost me some money.....in that I took a couple of Brian's suggestions to heart and added to my inventory of "old" and relatively "inexpensive" lenses as well as certain filters and a current Sony lens. A big thumbs up on this end.

Excellent guide

This book presents to someone like me who enjoys taking photographs, but doesn't know much about how to manually work a camera, a well written, plainly spoken, and easily understood set of carefully thought out instructions. I need the help from someone who is thoughtful enough to come down to my amateur level and bring me slowly up the ladder of understanding. This is an excellent guide for someone who needs to be intellegently, yet gently taught how to use the camera for best effect. I appreciate this book.

According to treasure hunter Brewer (aided by Bloomberg News editor-at-large Getler), who attempts to unravel their secrets in hopes of finding millions of dollars of hidden gold, the KGC was a sinister group of influential Southerners intent on engineering the secession of Southern states. They supposedly conspired to split the 1860 Democratic convention so that a weak candidate would emerge, guaranteeing Lincoln's election and support for secession-a deep game indeed. Losing the Civil War sent them underground, where, the authors say, political theorist and KGC member Jesse James, whose death they faked, led them to amass a fortune primarily through the pedestrian crimes of bank and stagecoach robbery and, more creatively, by collecting a multimillion-dollar award from Mexican Emperor Maximilian as repayment for aiding Maximilian's tottering regime. They hid their treasure, preserving knowledge of its whereabouts through a series of devilishly complex symbols known only to initiates for the day the South would rise again. Brewer believes some of his relatives were "sentinels" charged with protecting the KGC's hidden treasure. As fanciful as the group's history sounds (and the authors admit it is heavily based on circumstantial evidence), Brewer is convincing that the code existed and that he deciphered some of it, and his treasure hunting meets with modest success. Conspiracies abound

Is it true? Who knows. The real question is whether the book can keep my interest. At first it did a great job in laying out the story as the authors saw it. Unfortunately most of the last half of the book is spent trying to describe how he "located" the "treasure" spots. It also included maps which to my inexperienced eyes seem more of a stretch. I agree if there was a succession of Confederate treasure spots it would make sense that they all were laid out in similar patterns with markers. The question is whether you believe his explanation of markings. I have to admit it seems a bit of a stretch but who knows stranger things have happened I guess. The real problem is the book simply falls apart half way through whether true or not you no longer care.

An interesting read.

Is there really millions of dollars of Confederate treasure buried in strategically hidden spots across the Continental United States? Yes according to Bob Brewer, co-author of this book.

Shadow of the Sentinel follows Bob's quest to discover and uncover various hoardes of suposed Confederate treasure using his analytical skills, a few clues and a whole bunch of hearsay and supposition. Amazingly he seems to have 'cracked' the code and been on to something. However, we never really find out of he is as he's either stabbed in the back by his erstwhile partner(s) or is refusing to dig as he doesn't have the proper authorisation.
Bob Brewer is a smart fellow; he also seems to be a naive fellow, too. If you're confident that you've discovered buried treasure, be sure you really know somebody before you tell them.
The book gives a detailed history of the Knights of the Golden Circle whilst Bob's treasure hunt is interspersed with tales of the Knights Templar, Scottish Rite Freemasonry, The Civil War and beyond.
A book certainly worth reading even if the conclusion is inconclusive.

An exciting thriller that is even good for you!

Eckert's Fatal Encounter explains in great detail the interesting circumstances surrounding the deaths of three young members of the IRA in Gibralter, off the coast of Spain. The three young operatives were killed in a raid in 1988 by elite British commandos called the SAS. From here, an unbelievable chain of events are unleashed that involves pain, heartache, disbelief and anger. While arguments can be made for both sides on who was in the right, Eckert leaves that choice solely to the reader. He pays great attention to detail; and when these details are woven together objectively, it allows the reader to determine for him or herself what made these main players act or react. Even if you don't endorse the beliefs of one side or another, you at least had the rare insight that made you emphathetic. This is a solid and accurate piece of history. But as the reader gets more involved, it would be quite understandable if you thought you were smack dab in the middle of a Tom Clancy novel.
I would recommend this book for both history buffs, and those who just want to read a great thriller.

Simply delicious!

This is a wonderful book that "works" on three different levels:

First, it gives the history of the most important sweets around the world, and traces their lineage and background. For example, I never knew that baklava can be traced to ancient Greek honey cakes, or that American apple pie derives from Dutch tarts.

Second, it provides the ethnological context for each sweet and describes the national, religious, and social significance of many humble desserts. For example, the discussion of cacao in Latin America and chocolate sweets in Mexico that combine ingredients from all over the world, or the detailed description of the "baklava wars" that rocked the Middle East and the Balkans. In that respect the book brings out many interesting connections; for instance reading about the Nepalese halwa made me think of similar Lebanese and Middle Eastern delicacies with similar sounding names. The final result, when I tried it, closely resembles my version of halva. This sent me to the book’s index, trying to figure out the possible route of transmission.

Lastly, and most importantly, the book gives numerous unique and wonderful recipes from every corner of the world. The bibliography is as legitimate as you may find in an academic book, and the Roufs trace every recipe, often to authoritative local chefs or to online sources, and sometimes to the best and most authoritative source of all -somebody's grandma.

If I could change something about the book, I would have the desserts indexed alphabetically -now they are listed under their respective countries/regions of origin. Oh, and wait, about the "baklava wars"...

The intimacies, culture, and history of sweet treats around the world: a food adventure

We like to use the green Michelin guides when we travel - it helps us learn about all of the intimacies, culture, and history of a place. This book is like a Michelin guide for, well, sweet treats around the world. It puts sweet treats in the context of all that is unique and interesting about a country, how things evolved, and why and how we eat the sweets we eat.

More than just an encyclopedia, it is an adventure. I find myself getting immersed in a country (e.g., the Netherlands) and learning about my favorite cookie, the "speculaas", and I have a big "aha!" moment. Then I jump into Australia and learn about the history of the beloved Pavlova (the meringue, cream, and strawberry dessert that I make in the springtime) and that it is named for dancer Anna Pavlova who visited in the 1920s, perhaps representing her tutu and her light as air style.

Very readable ... and so logical to approach sweet treats from an anthropological point of view. I have enjoyed learning about the foods of the places I've been and the places I hope to go. PLUS -- my eyes have been opened about American sweet treats, from Red Velvet cake to M&Ms. I think of myself as a foodie, and this sophisticated yet down-to-earth book is right up my alley (and yes, I have lots of little sticky tabs in the recipes section. The first thing I'm going to make is the lemon souffle that Mrs. Sivertson brought from Norway.)

"Sweet Treats around the World" is a lovely combination of being extensively researched and at the same time, written from the heart. Both my husband and I are really enjoying the book.

Down's Economic Theory of Democracy is an easy to read introdution to the basics of voting theory. It is accessible to the casual reader as well as the hardcore acedemic. It's take on the electoral competition have become staples of high school civis as well as acedemic political theory.

The most misunderstood book in political science

An Economic Theory of Democracy is among the most influential books in political science. It is also among the most misunderstood. The book has 300 pages of content. The famous median voter theorem represents three of them. The remaining 297 pages involve extensions, limitations and generalizations -- exactly the sort of thing that most critics think it lacks. In the end, the book is really about the problems of limited information rather than about a unidimensional spatial model.

I was assigned several chapters from this book to read for one of my political science classes. I can't say I've come across any other books like this that describe the nature of electoral politics and realignments when they occur.

My professor did mention that this book revolutionized just how we view the electoral process. A good read, one that I would recommend. Diagrams are useful.

Still One of the Greatest Long Reads

I return to this novel again and again. It's a touchstone of the 20th century, one of the grand European intellectual novels that pose huge questions in terms of human beings in particular situations. The protagonist, Hans Castorp, is Mann's bourgeois Everyman, and it's wonderful haw a powerhouse intellectual like Mann can create a sympathetic but also mediocre hero who stumbles through a series of awakenings (and drowsings) on top of a mountain. But I'm making the book sound ponderous and pompous, and it's far too ironic and too seductive to be limited in that way. I came back to it because I was longing for a good long read. (Okay, not everyone's object of yearning.)

The Magic Mountain is also very much of its era. It was exactly luxurious institutions like the Berghof, along with those big hotel-spas in which the rich lived as they moved indolently over the face of Europe, that became impossible after WW I. But as the Settembrini-Naphta debates make very clear, the pleasures of unearned wealth and of relative peace are more passionate than Enlightenment values can address. Given the luxury, the lassitude and the license granted by tuberculosis and its promise of an early death, sexual, aesthetic and even mystical concerns become prominent. Mann gives us a great wallow in the Dionysian and doesn't, I think, endorse the life lit by reason unequivocally, although he's more skeptical about attaching value to a moribund leisure class. Which is only to say that I'm finding The Magic Mountain unexpectedly relevant for thinking about the One Per Cent and the rest of us on the flatlands.

The ordinariness of life and the brutal force of ideas

Are we, as in late 2016, living in a magic mountain, from whose stupor and vague uneasiness we will be called out to destroy? Is that moist spot in Hans Castorp's lungs, that kept him up the mountain for seven years, also inside our own lungs, delaying the resolution of things? Will we soon have to come down the slopes to wage war against each other? Is there ever a resolution anyway?

I read this book more than 20 years ago, as a teenager. Then, I read about a personal story, perhaps symbolic regarding the customs and ideas of Europeans of that time. I identified with the main character and his uneventful life, broken from its rhythm not of his own choice. I cried in the last page. Now I read this through an entire new lens, which might be superseded by another in 20 years' time. But what I perceive is the human conflict in the slow, predictable and boring life of the sanatorium, occupied by ill people from all over the world. The tension rises between a few, while the majority is slow to grasp the intensity and the fervor behind the ideas.

It is one of the most exasperating books on earth, some chapters you just want to end, and you think of giving up altogether - but then something happens, you keep going. Nothing fundamental has changed (isn't it true of most lives?), but there is just enough to keep the interest. The passage of time is the leitmotif, and it matters for the reader and narrator, but not to our hero, whose nails and hair grows, and that's how he notices time. You, as a reader, know that you are reading the masterpiece of a literary genius, and some paragraphs are indeed "literary". But most are just there because the narration, like the passing of time, does not recoil from the ordinariness that consists most of human life.

The unremarkable can be staggering in its constancy and ability to involve your whole being. You pay close attention to Hans Castorp's life and think: is he wasting it? What is the purpose after all, why did he love, why was he a friend, why anything if it all comes to...?

An enchanting metaphor of life!

The Magic Mountain is an enchanting novel by German novelist and short story writer, Thomas Mann (1875-1955), who received the 1929 Nobel Prize for Literature. This tour de force novel relates the story of Hans Castorp, a young engineer who goes to visit his tubercular cousin, Joachim Ziemssen at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Switzerland, The Berghof, "The Magic Mountain." Hans' last name Castorp perhaps alludes to the mythic twin Roman gods Castor and Pollux engendered in the close relationship between Hans and his cousin Joachim.

It turns out that The Berghof becomes a comfortable and dreamlike, totally enchanting place for Hans Castorp who finds himself unable to cut short his visit and return home to face the world as a young engineer. Instead, he becomes enamored of a charming aristocratic Russian lady, Madame Clavdia Chauchat, and the Magic Mountain itself. Moreover, it soon becomes obvious that Hans may also be infected with the tubercle bacillus, increasing the complexity of his situation and providing him with a valid reason to stay on the Magic Mountain. Castorp stays at the Berghof for seven years and only leaves to join the German army with the advent of World War I.

The novel provides a vehicle for Mann to discuss the advances and mysteries in medicine -- for example, the use of x-rays, which had only been discovered in 1895 by the physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, and Sigmund Freud's development of psychoanalysis and his theory of the unconscious. The novel also serves as a medium to describe complex personal inter-relationships and social interactions in society at large, and even more profoundly, the toll of diseases and human suffering, ultimately death and dying, as metaphors for man's existence, journey and final exit on this planet.

Simply, this is one of the best and greatest books of all times, and the Franklin Library edition is a collector's choice. Recommended without reservations with 5 stars.
