I took Professor Kaltner's Intro. to Islam class at Rhodes College. We used this text as brief overview of the Islamic faith and practices. This book would be very enlightening for those who have little or no knowledge of Islam and the Islamic way of life.

Interesting read

I read this for my Bible study group's summer discussion. The author lives here and came to our meeting to answer any questions. It was a very informative event.

The book gives a lot of basic information about the origin and practices of Islam and how many of its teachings have been distorted by radical fundamentalists. It also goes into some of the differences among the various sects, particularly Sunnis and Shiites. It is very short and easy to understand. I recommend it.

In the post-9/11 world where tolerance is threatened and there seems to be pervasive hatred simmering for what we don't understand, author Kaltner supplies what he promises. He provides a perspective that dwells on what Islam means, and has meant, historically to its followers and its place politically to the present. "Questions for Discussion" are included after each of the six chapters, making it useful as a textbook as well as a way to dwell on the material. I found "Islam" enlightening and would recommend it highly.

Asimov's Genius

Such is the case with "Universe", where some of the most difficult concepts in celestial mechanics are made plain by Asimov's gift for teaching.
With luck, humankind will take a greater interest in the cosmos in the 21st century. Professor Stephen Hawking has predicted extinction for our human species unless we can accelerate our desire to reach other planets. It would help if all earthlings took a more serious look toward the stars.
"Universe" makes clear not only the history of our understanding of the cosmos and why it makes sense, he also tackles and successfully explicates some of the more difficult concepts to apprehend like quasars, star explosions, and black holes. Book: “'Raise Your Vibration: 111 Practices to Increase Your Spiritual Connection” by Kyle Gray

I have always wondered how to increase my vibration and here I found a book exactly to deal with this subject-matter. It recommends that you do the 111 practices - one per day, however, as I was reviewing this book, it necessitated me doing the practices in a relatively short period of time.

Kyle Gray is the young author at only 28 years of age. He has been intuitive for a long period of time. When he was 4 years old, he was visited by his grandmother's soul. He continued to be intuitive into his teens when he developed an interest in spirituality and angels.

He covers many of the main topics such as everything is energy and that God is love. He writes that what he discussed in this book is not contrary to any religious doctrine and that it can be acceptable to all people. The information is basic to becoming a lightworker who does good in society and is trying to make a positive difference in the world.

Kyle Gray goes through presenting the practices or vibes according to the main seven chakras plus three others. One is the Earth Star Chakra which is found 6 to 12 inches below the feet. The second is the Soul Star Chakra which is found 6 to 12 inches above the crown or head chakra. Finally, there is the Stellar Gateway Chakra which is found 12 inches above the head chakra and with its connection to the cosmos.

When we accept the spiritual gift and mission that lightworker is on, we “awaken and empower ourselves from the inside out.”

One of my favourite vibes is vibe number 73 which is affectionately known as Cleanse, Tone and Moisturize. It speaks of the importance of cutting or shearing off the negative chords that are connected to us and then to recognize divine light as our inner being and finally to protect ourself with a shield in a colour of our choosing. By surrounding your aura, you can protect yourself against negative influences.

The first 90 practices or lessons make up the main part of the book. They are to be done one at a time on a daily basis as if you were doing A Course in Miracles. Then the next 21 vibes are affirmations that you can reflect upon also on a daily basis.

Finally, the book ends off with the Declaration of a Lightworker where you sign your name to it.

I recommend this book for people who are into New Age Spirituality and specifically as a good training book for Lightworkers. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. It was released on March 29, 2016 by Hay House.

He takes the mystery and fear out of intuition and remaining energetically clear and replaces it with love, joy, curiosity, and his usual zest for living life the best way we can. A great primer for people new to intuition, an amazing "power up" if you have been at it a while and your angel wings aren't as fluffy as they could be. Get a copy, dust of your halo, and get ready to raise your vibe...and keep it up there;)

I really love everything Kyle does and this book is no exception. I love his insights and use this book every morning now to focus on my intention for the day. I'm 1/2 way through and will love starting all over again when I'm finished because I know there will be new insights every time. I love Kyle's energy and the pure joy with which he shares himself with us.

Dr. Knoke received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1972, and taught for 13 years at Indiana University. For students of social sciences

This book is a statistics textbook for students of social sciences, not high-end users. I read earlier edition of this book in undergraduate statistics course. In that course, only basics of statistics were instructed. In social sciences, they don't need to know A to Z of statistics for all they have to know is what the function of SPSS or SAS means and what kind of data is needed and how the data would be analyzed in the statistics packages. There is no need to derive the functions in the textbook mathematically as they do in the courses of statistics department. We should understand what the function means, not how it is derived. This book is written in this regard. Unlike orthodox statistics textbook, this book tackles only the meaning of the statistical methods. In doing so, this book illustrates the methods with various field works and SPSS exercises. This is the stance most textbook written for social scientists takes. It seems that this book succeed in achieving the goal. Explanations are succinct and examples are apposite.
But this book is not that useful when you should do real research. Most social sciences articles use more advanced methods than what this book introduces. This book is good enough to beginners, but not so to who would be real researcher. At that point, you should have read more advanced ones already. If not, you couldn't read a piece of article in the common journals.

More material than we can cover
By not a natural
I used this textbook for several years teaching master's students from a broad range of disciplines, including nursing, journalism, exercise physiology, biomedical sciences, and athletic administration. Students found the material accessible, and, given the breadth of coverage, we were able to pick and choose what we needed moving at a comfortable pace.

For a first course, however, I think the material on SEM, especially since it's presented in LISREL form, could be deleted. The same may be true of the chapter on logistic regression, a topic usually reserved for a second course. Nevertheless, it too is covered in an accessible and interesting fashion.

Presenting material on multivariate contingency tables immediately before the material on multiple regression is a nice touch, but the choices of names for independent, dependent, and control variables for the tables are less usefully commonplace than many I can think of, such as race, education and income. This last concern, however, is a trivial matter.

Sadly, the book is expensive. But then all the really good intro. texts are. For one teaching in West Virginia that makes a big difference, and considerations of cost have prompted me to switch to Levin and Fox's paperback.

In any case, this is a very good book, and both my students and I have benefited from using it.

FONT TOO SMALL!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't gotten far enough into the material yet to give an in-depth analysis of its pros and cons in that sense, but I have to say: WHY do publishers insist on using microscopic fonts for such things??! I'm only in the first chapter and I already have a blinding headache from the size of the font. *Especially* if they use such tiny fonts, publishers should realllllly make e-book options available on ALL texts these days. It not only gives those of us who can't see as well as we used to a chance to choose our own font size, but it would also mean we wouldn't have to lug around heavy books!!

ETA: After further checking, I discovered that there is an option for an ebook. BUT! You still have to buy the hard copy, download/install *their* app, and you can only read your ebook via their app (or online, via their website), rather than it actually being a "regular" ebook. I'm glad there *is* an ebook, but it makes *NO* sense to have to buy a hard copy of the book in order to access it. I would a million times rather they keep the blasted hard copy that I can't read and let me "just" purchase the ebook on my own. Heck, I'd actually pay more for an ebook that I could load to my choice of app (Kindle, iBooks, whatever) and not have to store the hard copy of the book as well. Aside from that, the book app is a "fail" by itself -- the page turning motion is awkward and slow, and there are pages that don't load fully, and/or there are error messages instead of the page you're attempting to view, and/or it turns multiple pages instead of one at a time. Fail, publisher, fail. In every conceivable manner.

About the Author

Teri Dunn Chace is a writer and editor with more than thirty titles in publication, including Seeing Flowers (Timber Press, 2014), �How to Eradicate Invasive Plants (Timber Press, 2013) and The Anxious Gardener’s Book of Answers (Timber Press, 2012). She has also written and edited extensively for Horticulture, North American Gardener, Backyard Living, and Birds & Blooms. Raised in California and educated at Bard College in New York, Chace has gardened in a variety of climate zones and soil types, from inner city Portland, Oregon, to coastal Massachusetts. She now lives in a small upstate New York village with snowy winters and glorious summers.

Robert Llewellyn has been photographing plants and landscapes for almost forty years. His photographs have been featured in major art exhibits, and more than thirty books featuring his photography are in print. His 2007 book, Empires of the Forest: Jamestown and the Beginning of America, won five national awards in nonfiction and photography, and The Capital was an official diplomatic gift of the White House and State Department.

Beautiful and well-written

I purchased this book when I saw the sub-title, "Discover the Hidden Life of Flowers". For anyone who wants to know more about flowering plant families and see some stunning photographs of flowers, get this book. The author writes about 28 different flowering plant families. Reading about each one is like talking to a family member who knows all about the rest of the family ~ who belongs in the family, who belonged once before but has been cast out, their quirks, their foibles, all kinds of interesting tidbits. The pictures are amazing, showing lots of details that we often miss, even when we are holding the flower in our hand. Even the captions for the photos contain great info and should not be skipped over. I think that gardeners of all levels of experience will find this book to be readable, enjoyable, and useful. Plant addicts should be warned that this book will definitely feed your addiction and you'll read about more plants that you want to have in your garden.

Beautiful, unique photography plus informative, interesting essays

We are surrounded by flowers. They are everywhere. We glance at them and marvel at their beauty but do we really see the complexity of each bloom? Seeing Flowers takes a close-up look at over 300 popular garden flowers, revealing detail rarely seen in photos.

I’d experienced Robert Llewellyn’s remarkable photography in Seeing Trees and expected the book to be mostly a glorious display of photography. I wasn’t expecting the wonderful, informative and interesting essays complimenting the photos, each written in an easy to read, breezy style. As a gardener I thought I would already know much of this information, but there is always much more to learn.

The beautiful, unique photography in this book must be seen to be appreciated. Each photo is composed of many small images shot at a different point of focus, then stitched together using special software to create incredibly sharp, detailed images.

The book is organized into 28 plant families and accompanying photos. We get an intimate look at the distinguishing features of the plants in each group. Along with the botanical details of each flower we are treated to quotes, tales, folklore and fascinating bites of information: Different ways plants are pollinated, how seeds are dispersed, what’s edible and what isn’t, and some interesting factoids. I knew the flowers of nightshades are poisonous and that tomatoes are in the nightshade family, but I didn’t know early Americans considered tomatoes themselves to be poisonous and wouldn’t eat them, or that a Loyalist chef tried to poison George Washington by preparing a meal using tomatoes.

Both factual and entertaining, this is a gorgeous book and a worthy addition to anyone’s bookshelf.

This is a feast for the eyes and soul - an elegant blend of photos and text that kept me turning pages, and that's quite something for a non-gardener like me! This book will make a great gift for the family and friends who are.
