About the Author
David Knoke is Chairman, Department of Sociology. University of Minnesota, and was Fulbright Senior Research Scholar, Christian-Albrechts-Universitat, Kiel (1989). Dr. Knoke was co-founder and acting chair of the American Sociological Association's Section on Political Sociology, served as its newsletter co-editor, and is on the editorial board of "Administrative Science Quarterly. "In addition to numerous journal articles, his most recent books include "Organized for Action "(with J.R. Wood, 1981), "Network Analysis "(with J.H. Kuklinski, 1982), "The Organizational State (with "E.G. Laumann, 1987), "and Statistics for Social Data Analysis (withGW. "Bohrnstedt, 2nd Ed. 1987) and "Political Networks: The Structural Perspective "(1990). Dr. Knoke received his doctorate from the University of Michigan in 1972, and taught for 13 years at Indiana University. His main area of research is political sociology, with special interests in organizations and social networks.

For students of social sciences

This book is a statistics textbook for students of social sciences, not high-end users. I read earlier edition of this book in undergraduate statistics course. In that course, only basics of statistics were instructed. In social sciences, they don't need to know A to Z of statistics for all they have to know is what the function of SPSS or SAS means and what kind of data is needed and how the data would be analyzed in the statistics packages. There is no need to derive the functions in the textbook mathematically as they do in the courses of statistics department. We should understand what the function means, not how it is derived. This book is written in this regard. Unlike orthodox statistics textbook, this book tackles only the meaning of the statistical methods. In doing so, this book illustrates the methods with various field works and SPSS exercises. This is the stance most textbook written for social scientists takes. It seems that this book succeed in achieving the goal. Explanations are succinct and examples are apposite.
But this book is not that useful when you should do real research. Most social sciences articles use more advanced methods than what this book introduces. This book is good enough to beginners, but not so to who would be real researcher. At that point, you should have read more advanced ones already. If not, you couldn't read a piece of article in the common journals.

More material than we can cover
By not a natural
I used this textbook for several years teaching master's students from a broad range of disciplines, including nursing, journalism, exercise physiology, biomedical sciences, and athletic administration. Students found the material accessible, and, given the breadth of coverage, we were able to pick and choose what we needed moving at a comfortable pace.
For a first course, however, I think the material on SEM, especially since it's presented in LISREL form, could be deleted. The same may be true of the chapter on logistic regression, a topic usually reserved for a second course. Nevertheless, it too is covered in an accessible and interesting fashion.
Presenting material on multivariate contingency tables immediately before the material on multiple regression is a nice touch, but the choices of names for independent, dependent, and control variables for the tables are less usefully commonplace than many I can think of, such as race, education and income. This last concern, however, is a trivial matter.
Sadly, the book is expensive. But then all the really good intro. texts are. For one teaching in West Virginia that makes a big difference, and considerations of cost have prompted me to switch to Levin and Fox's paperback.
In any case, this is a very good book, and both my students and I have benefited from using it.

FONT TOO SMALL!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't gotten far enough into the material yet to give an in-depth analysis of its pros and cons in that sense, but I have to say: WHY do publishers insist on using microscopic fonts for such things??! I'm only in the first chapter and I already have a blinding headache from the size of the font. *Especially* if they use such tiny fonts, publishers should realllllly make e-book options available on ALL texts these days. It not only gives those of us who can't see as well as we used to a chance to choose our own font size, but it would also mean we wouldn't have to lug around heavy books!!
ETA: After further checking, I discovered that there is an option for an ebook. BUT! You still have to buy the hard copy, download/install *their* app, and you can only read your ebook via their app (or online, via their website), rather than it actually being a "regular" ebook. I'm glad there *is* an ebook, but it makes *NO* sense to have to buy a hard copy of the book in order to access it. I would a million times rather they keep the blasted hard copy that I can't read and let me "just" purchase the ebook on my own. Heck, I'd actually pay more for an ebook that I could load to my choice of app (Kindle, iBooks, whatever) and not have to store the hard copy of the book as well. Aside from that, the book app is a "fail" by itself -- the page turning motion is awkward and slow, and there are pages that don't load fully, and/or there are error messages instead of the page you're attempting to view, and/or it turns multiple pages instead of one at a time. Fail, publisher, fail. In every conceivable manner.
