More please.

That Bless Me, Father is a rollicking good yarn, thriller, and ‘boy’s own adventure’ cannot be denied. But much more importantly, what drives it is the need to expose the mis-use and abuse of power in the Catholic Church - in the public sphere as well as in the lives of the innocent. The story is told from the perspective of someone whose life is torn apart by that power. Bless Me, Father is also an historical novel, with a well researched basis in fact.

To begin Zammit paints a compelling picture of life in the Southern Shire of Sydney in the fifties. The landscape, family, the beach ethos, are all there. It was a gentler time, we sometimes say. But in making his way as the son of immigrants, life for the novel's protagonist , Anthony Fabrizzi, is far from easy – or gentle. The idyllic surroundings are often a refuge and inspiration for Anthony and his friends, but often too they provide a heartbreaking contrast to the story he tells.

Fabrizzi looks back at his life from a moment of crisis, and although his is a mature voice and perspective, recounting the horrors perpetrated by the Church on innocent children -and the devastation wrecked in his life and those of his friends- the narrator lets us feel the all shame, confusion and betrayal children feel. He shows us the damage - with silences and few words. Indeed the silence and confusion of children abused by those who are supposed to care for and nurture them, is deftly handled. No sensationalism here, the facts alone are truly devastating. All the while - life, the good times, the music, the girls, the surf, continue as they do - alongside and shadowed by horrific childhood and adolescent secrets.

Physical and sexual abuse, a manifestation of the misuse of power in the Church, is replaced for the adult Fabrizzi by the awareness of a different sort of abuse – political, economic and social. The perpetrators are the same; the crimes different.

Where there is great power there is great evil, and Fabrizzi is destined to “seek out the evil and expose it.” His quest to expose the machinations of the Church power-brokers makes for a page turning thriller. I feel Bless Me, Father is just the beginning of Fabrizzi’s adventures as he unmasks the dark face of Rome. There is more to know, and I want to read more from Zammit. Sequel please.

An excellent book. A real life experience
By Anthony Ciardi
WOW ! What a story.
It brings back many fond memories for me, as I was an Italian immigrant in 1951, of similar age to Anthony Fabrizzi, living in Balmain. I went to a Catholic school, Balmain Christian Brothers and also I was an Altar Boy at St. Augustine's Church. Luckily I did not have any bad experiences as did Anthony Fabrizzi.
This book traces the life of an average Italian boy living in the suburb of Cronulla, in the southern part of Sydney, and the hardships and tragedies that came across his path. Robert Zammit describes the life of the main character, Anthony Fabrizzi in graphic detail. The important aspects of Anthony's life are recounted. The tragedies he faced and the horrifying experience of him and his friend at the priesthood Seminary are detailed. Then his ordination as a Catholic priest and his subsequent experiences at the Vatican are described in vivid detail.
The book finishes on a brighter note where Anthony was able to resume a normal life is reunited with his one and only childhood sweetheart, Susan and their life thereafter.
This book is a mixture of fiction and reality. It is extremely well written, with a fantastic vocabulary of a highly educated intellectual author.
It is a priceless contribution to society to help people who have been sexually abused by members of a highly respected religious order that was trusted or by any other offender. It helps them overcome their experience with courage and determination, as seen in the character of Anthony.
The corruptness exposed in the Vatican, including murder and attempted murder and alliance with the Mafia and with Nazi Germany, in this book is only the, "tip of the iceberg," of what has been happening all along. The history books and encyclopaedias will verify this.
So, this book will help people to open their eyes to reality.
It is important for us to recall the very words of Jesus:
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. 16 You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thorn bushes or figs from thistles? 17 Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Therefore by their fruits you will know them.
(Matthew 7:15-20 New King James Version (NKJV)
I would rate this book with 5 out of 5 stars.
Anthony Ciardi.

A GOOD READ
By Vicki CASE
Bless Me Father is a well-written, well researched debut novel by the Australian debut author - Robert Zammit. The story line however read like a cross between The Thorn Birds & The Davinci Code. It tells the story of a young Anthony Fabrizzi who grows up in Sydney, Australia. When Anthony's new born sibling (Angel) is born prematurely he makes a promise to God that he will join the priesthood if Angel comes home. Anthony keeps his promise, not before being molested by a priest at school. The story takes you on his journey into the priesthood, then his military service during the Vietnam war before he is taken to Rome by a family friend and given a trusted duty that finds him embroiled in a life and death struggle with the mafiosa and the Catholic church; followed by a cat & mouse game of chase.

Whilst the book is well-written I found it difficult to be captivated by the storyline or the principal character. At one stage, after reading some 14 chapters, I left the book on the shelf for six weeks before I decided I owed it to the author to finish and review it. The principal character failed to hold my interest or attention at all.

I dont mean to deter anyone from reading the book but I have to review the book the way it touched me; & it failed to grab me, nor hold my attention throughout.
