If the author runs again with the bulls, I'll be rooting for the bulls. An interesting title for a book but hardly related to the contents.

Hemingway, the bulls and the path to manhood.

It’s not a great time to be a man. Many of us have forgotten how, others have forgotten they like having us around. I’m not talking about serial bedding of women, frat-boy braggadocio, or even the jousting we know happens on trading floors and in locker rooms. After all, none of that is manly, it’s unseemly. I’m talking about personal responsibility, about standing up for the little guy, graciousness and coolness under pressure. Frank Miniter has written a book about many things, but mostly it’s about what makes us men, gentlemen, really, and how to become one. (Spoiler: It’s not easy, but it's fun.)
He writes about time-honored codes, rites of manhood, heroism and sacrifice, using examples in art and literature, but also in life, today and a thousand years ago. It’s a whirlwind trip that keeps coming back to its home in Pamplona, where one of the great ritual tests of manhood occurs every summer, the running of the bulls. The reasons he decides to run himself are laid bare and examined through the lenses of the writers, scholars and philosophers who have been before him. Hemingway and his first novel, The Sun Also Rises, play an important role in his self-examination, as does a scholar-mentor who may have read far more intelligently into that book than any lit professor I’ve studied under.
Miniter conveys his dispatch deftly, not unlike his heroes, in the pared-back style of the Samurai, or even Hemingway himself. The smartness of his prose mirrors the smartness of his message. Crafted in each of his vignettes are the lessons, the advice, we seem to have forgotten to tell our sons. If the path to manhood has become lost to disuse, a faint, forgotten trail, overgrown with bramble and brush, then Miniter’s book is the map home again. If his models are Hemingway, the Bushido, or the knights errant; if the test is the running of the bulls, even as metaphor, then the way is not only noble, but exhilarating.
