�Rarely does a gardening book raise eyebrows, let alone Hell.
Phil M. Williams' "Fire the Landscaper" sounds a battle cry defending private property, homesteading and chemical-free living -- "weeds" and all. A former landscaping mogul, Williams exposes the industry's practice of over-fertilizing and over-mowing lawns, a cycle driven by homeowners chained to such maintenance by Home Owner's Association (HOA) rules or a "keeping up with the Joneses" mentality. Williams also discusses questionable landscaper design and pricing practices, to educate consumers about what they're really paying for, from below-grade trees and shrubs to the lack of permaculture-style plantings that can provide food as well as aesthetics.
Part biography, part instruction manual for turning lawns into natural and productive garden-spaces, Williams describes the pride and pitfalls of homesteading. From living with nosy neighbors who can't get their heads out of their mole-holes long enough to understand "perfect" lawns require plant killing toxins that impact land for generations, to downright mean folks who can't comprehend that so-called weeds are often edible, and necessary for healthy soil. For the intrepid homesteader, it seems, fighting City Hall often comes with nature-led land management.
Williams bucks the system with style, however, and digresses from instructor to insider often. His stories includes a satisfyingly lurid dream sequence worthy of Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here" guaranteed to make the reader want to start an illegal mulch pile immediately. The idea of being green has become more of a fashion statement than anything of substance. Many times it amounts to buying the right car, the right produce, or the right light bulbs. What it doesn't do is challenge the overarching narrative we tell ourselves in the first world. I think for many people that narrative involves technology saving the day. This technological domination and disconnection from nature is a large part of the problem. Meanwhile the solutions are simple and right in front of our noses.
In Fire the Landscaper, I wanted to shed light on a simple but devastating problem that could be fixed with minimal effort. Toward the end of my time as a landscaper, I began to question why we maintain properties the way we do. I answered the why, with research into cultural bias, group psychology, history, philosophy, homeowners associations, and local ordinances. The research was as fascinating as it was disheartening, and at times, utterly ridiculous.
While it is important to identify the problems and the consequences, it was more important to me to offer practical, realistic solutions that anyone could integrate into their busy life. I hope readers of Fire the Landscaper enjoy and benefit from the text.

Phil M. Williams is a blogger, author, activist, gardener, permaculture designer, and consultant to the landscape industry for companies interested in sustainability. He currently lives in Central Pennsylvania, with his wife Denise, where they homestead and practice permaculture.

A MUST READ for everyone

All I can say is wow. Just wow. Although FtL reads like a beginners guild on WHY polycultures / permaculture are important, I've learned an incredible amount, things I thought I'd already grasped. I wish I had a photographic memory, so that I could share these truths with the hubs and talk him into creating an ecosystem here in our 1/4 acre suburbia lot that is only months away from a landscape design!
Mr. Williams had me in tears a few time with his rich descriptions, story telling, and simplistic revelations of truth to a simpler, richer way of living. A definite MUST READ for everyone - and I mean everyone.

15+ years in the green industry and beyond...this book is a game changer.

Read this book.
It's really as simple as that. Whether you're in the industry or not, this book will likely strike a chord with you. It's easy to read and not overly complicated with industry jargon. At 38 years of age, I have almost 20 years of experience in the green industry. From nurseries, garden centers and tree farms; to residential and commercial landscape design, installation and maintenance - this book makes complete sense.
Moreover, I am a permaculture enthusiast myself and have a Permaculture Design Certificate (PDC) myself (Geoff Lawton Online PDC 2015). The author makes great observations about the industry and how to incorporate positive changes in your life whether you are a homeowner or someone like myself who has spent a lifetime working in different facets of the industry. In addition to the suggestions, there is a long list of resources available at the back of the book.
I feel so strongly about this book, that I paused while on vacation to locate and connect to a wi-fi station in order to write this review while the book and my feelings about it were still fresh in my mind. I applaud the author for writing in the manner that he did and taking he steps he did to live a healthy, positive, and beneficial life. As someone who is in a period of transition themselves, it encourages me to follow the path that my heart has guided me towards...knowing that I am on the right path and there are others who are doing the same thing.
Phil, I hope that you read these reviews and understand that your book *is* making an impact. I hope to follow in your footsteps and have someone down the road write a review like this about my own book that I wish to write. This is how we make change, my friend - understand that your book is successful in making that change. I like to tell myself that I will feel successful if my words influence just *one* person to live a more healthy, positive, and beneficial life. I guarantee that this book has done that and will continue to do so. I gifted this book to someone else in the industry who has his own business and challenges regarding the industry. This book is sure to kick-start your journey into permaculture!

Fire The Landscaper was a worthwhile read. Obviously it has the potential to make some enemies in the landscape industry (lawn treatment in particular). But the author is entitled to talk the talk. After all, he fired himself!
In part, this book demonstrates one man's journey from a materialistic, environmentally negligent lifestyle to a simpler, eco-friendly way of existence. Ultimately this has led Phil to a happier, more content way of life. This satisfaction is something he eagerly wants to share with others. We just need to take the time to listen!
The book also exposes the damage caused by reliance on pesticides and herbicides in our lawns and landscapes. Social norms have created a cultural perception which dictates how our properties should look. People are concerned about what their neighbors think, but often don't worry one bit about what that means for wildlife and the environment. Phil offers practical suggestions to improve our approach to lawn care.
The author also does not hold back (or does he?) in exposing blood thirsty HOAs and extreme municipal regulation. There certainly is an irony in this "free nation" which will throw you in jail if there is a brown spot in your yard. Humans always seem to find ways to abuse their power over others. Injustice prevails. Phil sees this and expounds on the matter from the perspective of a home owner.
There is a better way. Fire The Landscaper doesn't just bash everything we hold dear about our society, leaving us with nothing but frustration and disillusionment. It also offers a replacement, a better way of doing things. Permaculture.
Phil discusses many basic principles of permaculture and the advantages they offer. This book is not going to teach you every little thing about permaculture. Instead, it is the precursory reading that will heighten your appreciation for the work people are doing in the field. It will prepare you for the change in cultural techniques that our society so desperately needs.
I found this book to be easy to read, while giving me lots to think about. I recommend it!
