About the Author
SUZANNE BROOKER received her BFA at the California Institute of the Arts in 1979, attended by invitation the Whitney Museum Independent Study program in New York City, and pursued her drawing studies at the School of Visual Arts. In 1990 Brooker returned to the West Coast and studied life drawing with Gary Faigin at the Gage Academy of Art and completed her MFA in figurative painting under Domenic Cretera at California State University, Long Beach. The author of�Portrait Painting Atelier�(2011), Brooker currently paints and teaches drawing and painting at the Gage Academy.

Good organization, real practical tips, and a beautiful collection of landscape paintings from many artists

Many artists limit their selection of paintings in their books to their own works. This book, in contrast, includes the artist's own works (particularly when she is showing, step by step, how she goes about painting), but also works from many other magnificent landscape artists. (In fact, this book first came to my attention because the cover features a work by Renato Muccillo). The paintings are very well selected to illustrate particular points she's making. I love that the instruction in this book encompasses both the big picture and the nitty gritty (such as brush techniques). While many art books are geared to beginners, this is an excellent art book that I believe has a lot to offer even for advanced painters. I consider myself intermediate, and it's perfect for me.

Pair with Albala and Carlson, and you have everything you need on landscape painting technique

I would put this together with Mitchell Albala's book in terms of helpfulness and beautiful images (and in fact Albala has a couple of paintings in this one, and I love his work, but I especially enjoyed the works here by Renato Muccillo). Although I paint in acrylics, not oils, I've been struggling with techniques I relied on in watercolor that don't work as well in acrylic. Most acrylic painting books seem to focus on gimmicks like gold leaf or carving shapes in gesso, and that is not what I want to do. I've looked at some other books on oil painting but they often relied on wet-in-wet and/or painterly techniques, which is not something I want to do with acrylics. I could see right away that this book gives many examples of the painter working over a dry layer, which is what I do, so these are techniques I can use. I have seen many examples of so-called Old Master type painting that involves toning the support, but I had not seen any colors used for that besides grays and earths. This is the first time I saw someone toning with cadmium orange. Right away I wanted to try that. I also appreciated the description of a flake white hue made from 1 parts titanium and 2 parts zinc. I have just begun working with white (since it's a no-no in watercolor, I never used it until the past year or so), and this formulation I will definitely try. The step-by-step paintings of clouds are especially helpful. Lots of good stuff here!

In The Middle

This book begins slowly, seemingly buried under a thick layer of verbiage and beautiful thoughts, without much practical application. Like music, you just can't read about art technique for long without dozing off. I almost gave up, thinking she might make a better writer than painter. But the quality of the art led me on, and by the middle of the book, the author stopped talking and started showing, and the book suddenly came alive...her observations and suggestions were first class, even for me--a long-term landscapist. I think next time she should just drop the first fifty pages and begin "in medias res" as the Greeks used to say, or maybe the Zoroastrians, I forget.

Born in Eunice, Louisiana, and raised in the West, James L. Roark received his B.A. from the University of California, Davis, and his Ph.D. from Stanford University. His dissertation won the Allan Nevins Prize. Since 1983, he has taught at Emory University, where he is Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of American History. In 1993, he received the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award, and in 2001–2002 he was Pitt Professor of American Institutions at Cambridge University. He has written Masters without Slaves: Southern Planters in the Civil War and Reconstruction (1977). With Michael P. Johnson, he is author of Black Masters: A Free Family of Color in the Old South (1984) and editor of No Chariot Let Down: Charleston’s Free People of Color on the Eve of the Civil War (1984). �MICHAEL P. JOHNSON
Born and raised in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Michael P. Johnson studied at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, where he received a B.A., and at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California, where he earned� his Ph.D.� He is currently professor of history at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and raised in Palo Alto, California, Patricia Cline Cohen earned a B.A. at the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1976, she joined the history faculty at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2005–2006 she received the university’s Distinguished Teaching Award. Cohen has written A Calculating People: The Spread of Numeracy in Early America (1982; reissued 1999) and The Murder of Helen Jewett: The Life and Death of a Prostitute in Nineteenth-Century New York (1998). She is coauthor of The Flash Press: Sporting Male Weeklies in 1840s New York (2008). In 2001–2002 she was the Distinguished Senior Mellon Fellow at the American Antiquarian Society. �SARAH STAGE
Sarah Stage was born in Davenport, Iowa, and received a B.A. from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. in American Studies from Yale University. She has taught U.S. history for more than twenty-five years at Williams College and the University of California, Riverside. Currently she is professor of Women’s Studies at Arizona State University at the West campus in Phoenix. Her books include Female Complaints: Lydia Pinkham and the Business of Women’s Medicine (1979) and Rethinking Home Economics: Women and the History of a Profession (1997). She recently returned from China where she had an appointment as visiting scholar at Peking University and Sichuan University.�SUSAN M. HARTMANN
Susan M. Hartmann received her B.A. from Washington University and her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. A specialist in modern U.S. history and women’s history, she has published many articles and four books: Truman and the 80th Congress (1971); The Home Front and Beyond: American Women in the 1940s (1982); From Margin to Mainstream: American Women and Politics since 1960 (1989); and The Other Feminists: Activists in the Liberal Establishment (1998). She is currently Arts and Humanities Distinguished Professor of History at Ohio State University and recently was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Needed for a class, found it put together very well

As far as textbooks go, it was the formatting that make it what it is. Lots of pictures & primary sources compliment the information being covered in the text. Makes it not as boring a read as most history books. You actually find yourself reading all the little extras.

What makes this series truly great? The fact that they give you a choice on book format to purchase. In a college this textbook would be for a US history 1 & 2. You can chose to purchase the expensive and heavy Hardback if you know you are going to take both parts. Or you can buy a softback of Vol 1 or Vol 2, depending on which class you are enrolled in.

As an adult student, who only recently returned after over 10 year gap I had no reason to want to buy the big textbook. Already had US History 1 credits from the last time around. Through Amazon.com I was able to find the correct edition of the book, while the college bookstore refused to carry it!

Thankful that Amazon.com exists. :)

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky was born on August 12, 1831, at Dnepropetrovsk (Ekaterinoslav), Ukraine, daughter of Colonel Peter Alexeyevich von Hahn and novelist Helena Andreyevna (n�e de Fadeyev). In 1849 she married N. V. Blavatsky, and shortly thereafter began more than 20 years of extensive travel, which brought her into contact with mystic traditions the world over. She was the principal founder of the Theosophical Society in New York City in 1875, and devoted her extraordinary literary talents to its humanitarian and educational purposes until her death in London, England, on May 8, 1891. Along with writing her several books, H. P. Blavatsky kept up a voluminous correspondence and also contributed a steady stream of essays and articles to periodicals in English, French, and Russian.

Pierre-Emmanuel Gaillardon is a research associate at the Laboratory of Integrated Systems, �cole Polytechnique F�d�rale de Lausanne, Switzerland. He holds an undergraduate degree from �cole Sup�rieure de Chimie Physique �lectronique de Lyon, France; an M.Sc from Institut National des Sciences Appliqu�es de Lyon, France; and a Ph.D from Laboratoire d'�lectronique des Technologies de l'Information (CEA-LETI), Grenoble, France and the University of Lyon, France. Starting January 2016, he will assume an assistant professorship with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, USA. Previously, he was a research assistant at CEA-LETI, and a visiting research associate at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, USA. Dr. Gaillardon is an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology, a reviewer for several journals and funding agencies, a technical program committee member for many conferences, and the recipient of the C-Innov 2011 Best Thesis and Nanoarch 2012 Best Paper awards.

Johnson is a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Minnesota.� He is Co-Director of the Cooperative Learning Center.� He received his doctoral degree in social psychology from Columbia University.� His research areas include social interdependence (cooperation and competition) and conflict resolution.� He is a past-editor of the American Educational Research Journal.� He has authored over 500 research articles and book chapters.� He is the author of over 50 books, including Reaching Out:� Interpersonal Effectiveness and Self-Actualization, Active Learning:� Cooperation in the College Classroom, Cooperation in the Classroom, Creative Controversy, Teaching Students To Be Peacemakers, and Cooperation and Competition:� Theory and Research.� He has received numerous awards from such organizations as the American Psychological Association, the American Educational Research Association, and the Interactional Association for Conflict Management.�

Frank P. Johnson graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and received a Masters of��Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School in Boston and his Doctor in Ministry degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological School. He has 35 years experience in the field of Applied Behavioral Science, with professional recognition from NTL Institute of Applied Behavioral Science, Association for Creative Change, Consultant/Trainers Southwest, and the Mid-Atlantic Association for Training and Consulting. He was employed for 13 years at the University of Maryland Counseling Center, teaching group counseling, and, during that time was a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Maryland School of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. He has written many journal articles, contributed chapters to books, and is the co-author of�Joining Together: Group Theory and Group Skills. He has been a consultant with a variety of organizations, including educational, governmental, religious, and industrial. From 1984 - 1996 he was employed at Ethyl Corporation as a Human Resources Development Associate. Since his retirement from Ethyl, he has served as an Interim Minister in several churches and is now employed as a Chaplain for Canon Hospice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

great study guide

I read this book cover to cover and then used Pain Management Nursing Exam Flashcard Study System from Mometrix Test Preparation to study for the certified pain management exam. These 2 things are all you need to pass the test. The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it's in outline format instead of paragraph form. Sometimes it was confusing to follow.

STAN FARYNA is Director of Research of the New Coalition for Economic and Social Change, a Chicago-based think tank, and a research associate of The David Institute, a social research group in California.

BRAD STETSON is Director of Studies at The David Institute and lecturer in Religious Studies at California State University, Long Beach. He is author of Pluralism and Particularity in Religious Belief (Praeger, 1993), Human Dignity and Contemporary Liberalism (forthcoming from Praeger), coauthor (with Joseph G. Conti) of Challenging the Civil Rights Establishment (Praeger, 1993), and editor of The Silent Subject (Praeger, 1996).

JOSEPH G. CONTI is a Research Associate at The David Institute and a Lecturer in philosophy at Kansas Community College. He is coauthor (with Brad Stetson) of Challenging the Civil Rights Establishment (Praeger, 1993).

The Right Book at the Right Time!

As I once heard Jesse Jackson say, "The rising tide lifts all theboats." I see Stan Faryna in the role that Walter Mosely played in the case of Paul Coates and Black Classic Press. Few people outside of a small circle of blacks knew anything about Paul Coates and Black Classic Press... Coates' book towed other black books out of the back waters and into the main headwaters. I suspect that "Black and Right" will do this too.
This is an important book showcasing some of the new voices from the black right. It is so important, "Dunbar on Black Books" is giving this book a great deal of attention. We published an interview with Stan Faryna in the May issue of "Dunbar On Black Books." We also plan to have annotations of selected chapters of this courageous new book in four or more forthcoming issues.
This kind of attention to a single book is unprecendented in our pages. Since the first issue of "Dunbar On Black Books," we have cited some 428 books, but we have not given such attention to any other book. That is how important "Black And Right" is, and at a time when Americans may be ready to seriously discuss race relations!

A must-read book for the well-read and those-in-the-know!

Get Rep. J. C. Watts on the phone and ask him why he doesn't have an essay in "Black and Right!" This book is an outstanding collection of essays. Powerful, intelligent, and compelling voices remind us to look up and move forward.

Though strong and exciting recommendations, the advance praise by famous columnists (Cal Thomas, Walter Williams, Father Neuhaus, et al.) is surprisingly modest. This book is an important contribution to American thought and political life. I salute the contributors and editors of "Black and Right." The analysis, confession, drama, heritage, reflection, and story of these thoughtful black Americans puts this book on my top 100 book list.

Call the Washington Post! Let them know that American politics will never be the same again. Heritage Foundation's Adam Meyerson is mistaken: "Black and Right: The Bold New Voice of Black Conservatives in America" is not a tremor; it is a major earthquake registering 10 on my Richter scale.

This fantastic book will rescue a civilization that was going down in flames. It tears down the wall of racial division, it puts faith and reason back into the Culture and Constitution, and it gathers us all together as we finally advance in making the Dream true!

About the Author
Phillip B. Sparling is a Professor of Applied Physiology and Health Behavior in the College of Sciences at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). He received his undergraduate degree from Duke University and masters and doctorate from the University of Georgia. In addition to being a teacher and researcher at Georgia Tech for three decades, he has been a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Cape Town Medical School in South Africa, a Senior Scientist at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, and a Visiting Research Professor in the School of Population Health at the University of Queensland in Australia. He has published some 70 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals. Dr. Sparling is a Fellow of the AAHPERD Research Consortium, American College of Sports Medicine, National Academy of Kinesiology, and the Society of Behavioral Medicine. His current work focuses on real-world projects that enable individuals and communities to change lifestyle behaviors to prevent and control chronic diseases.

Kerry J. Redican is a Professor of Health Education and Health Promotion in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech. His education includes a bachelors degree from California State University at Long Beach, M.S. in health education from the UCLA School of Public Health, Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and MPH in health administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a faculty member at Virginia Tech for over two decades, he has been actively involved in development, implementation, and evaluation of health education programs in schools and communities. He is a co-author of four textbooks and has over 60 publications in health journals. Dr. Redican is a Fellow of the American School Health Association and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Association for Health Education and as President of the Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

A Bit Dated

A bit dated as far as the information, but it was a requirement for my son's course so we had to rent it. Just don't take the information too seriously and you'll be fine. If you're after current info, this isn't the book for you.
